More exhibition news! As you can see, we are busy behind the scenes. Colin Wilkin, the Keeper of the Fry Collection has been working with Mark Hearld selecting pieces from the stores to put on show in ‘Fry’s Popular Delights’. The exhibition will explore the link between the ‘Fry Artists’ and Popular Art. It will feature exciting items on loan from other collections as well as our own works. Our team of hard-working volunteers have been using their practical skills to good effect, preparing works for hanging. ‘Fry’s Popular Delights’ co-curated by Mark Hearld and Colin Wilkin will be open between Sunday 5th April and Sunday 25th October. #fryartgallery #saffronwalden #essexevents #exhibitions

We are looking to appoint a new Chair of Trustees to build on the successes of our first 40 years - could this be you? The most important requirements for the role are the skills to Chair and a passion for our cause. Applications close on 19 December. Further information about the role and appointment process can be found via this link fryartgallery.org/chair-of-trust… Image: John Aldridge RA, Table With Objects

We are proud custodians with @townergallery of a selection of rare woodblocks by Eric Ravilious and Tirzah Garwood. Believed lost since the 1950s, the blocks were recovered through the initiative of members of the artists’ family and @artlossregister, with the support of @artfund and an Arts Council England/V&A Purchase Grant Fund. While the Towner Eastbourne is currently showing some of these pieces in their Ravilious Collection, the blocks which are now @fryartgallery will take their place along side the gallery’s other important works by Ravilious and Garwood in forthcoming exhibitions. 1. David Oelman, Fry Art Gallery Chairman with Ella Ravilious, Victoria and Albert Museum architecture and design curator and granddaughter of the artists 2. Some of the recovered woodblocks 3. Installation in progress…Richard Bawden, the Hadleigh Years opens next weekend on 26 July in the Gibson Room. A versatile painter, printmaker, illustrator and designer, there’s such warmth, wit and keen observational detail to enjoy in Bawden’s later works. This very special commemorative exhibition is curated by John Ready and Hattie Bawden #fryartgallery #saffronwalden #greatbardfieldartists #essexevents

Study for a mural by Edward Bawden, watercolour, 1951 is our Work of the Month. This preparatory sketch entitled ‘Country Life’ for the Lion and Unicorn Pavilion at the Festival of Britain is a recent addition to our collection. In it Bawden includes depictions of familiar Essex buildings and images of agricultural practice past and present. The finished mural occupied the entire wall at one end of the pavilion. See it in the Gibson Room until 13 July in ‘Bardfield Murals’ #fryartgallery #saffronwalden #murals #twentiethcenturyart

In the Bawden Room, Finding a Home at the Fry curator @ellaravilious invited people with connections to the Fry's artists to curate cabinets as if they were their own kitchen dressers or mantle pieces. These beautiful displays recall childhoods and working lives immersed in creativity #fryartgallery #saffronwalden #greatbardfieldartists

@FryArtGallery @Ravilious2 It’s a marvellous show. A very different context for the work of these artists and a wonderful complement to the Dulwich exhibition of Tirzah Garwood’s work. And it’s FREE!
