This is why im anti-localizer. All these westerners constantly spouting a out how this character is trans and going as far as harrassing the japanese for being "transphobic" because westerners dont have the nuance for these japanese cultural phenomenon. Many japanese are calling this character otokonoko (male-daughter, a crossdressing male). This character isn't trans, im not against trans people but this character is a male. From what the japanese are saying, this character is similar to Ruka from Steins;Gate, a self-defined male who crossdresses specifically to be more attractive to a person they love.

今期だけでこのレベルの男の娘が2人も出てるの本当にヤバすぎる 2026年のアニメは男の娘を推していくんですか?

@MadamSavvy Please spread this image. So many people can't tell the difference between brown and black people.

Any Japanese users can correct me if i'm wrong but a general synopsis with my opinions tossed in. Overall, Japan has a lot of work to do in regards to trans acceptance. They are absolutely lacking behind. There is progress being made in media though with more characters that are intentionally transgender. This is a fair criticism of Japan. On the other side however, Japan is very progressive in the GNC space with the freedoms to express queerness more fluidly with things like modern Otokonokos or traditional kabuki's onnagata without rigidness. (Femboys are a western example of GNC communities that are frequently attacked for being "harmeful" to trans people and are often viewed as trans people who don't know it yet) Both deserve to exist and progress can be made between both sides to improve Trans acceptance in japan and GNC acceptance in the west. Ultimately, Otokonoko are not trans, they are boys in identity but are more fluid about it as they like to look cute and feminine. Trans women are fully female is appearance and identity. Creation of trans characters should be possible without erasing GNC characters like otokonoko. There is a misunderstanding of japanese culture from the west as well as a lack of trans progress from Japan. Stop attacking Japan for things that are actually good because its not your binary worldview and start focusing on the real things japan does wrong like trans discrimination.

I can't think of a single example of a post like this being accurate to what's happening, and there are a lot of them. The "phobia" is always just people/characters saying "well actually the character is guy" because the character is a guy.
