I worked on the staff of CINCLANTFLT/SACLANT. In case you don't know, SACLANT is Strategic Allied Command, Atlantic. It is headquartered in Norfolk, VA. It is the only NATO base on US soil, and it is the headquarters of the NATO military commander, who shares responsibilities with both NATO and commanding the Atlantic Fleet. I was a big proponent of NATO when we were fighting the old Soviet Union. Even then, the CINC (and the head of SACLANT), ADM Kidd, was constantly pointing out how little money Europe spent on their own defense. Europe depended on the US to protect them, as we did in two world wars and the Cold War. We protected them and their response when we were taking out the number one sponsor of terrorism in the world was to tell us that, because they'd let a lot of Muslims into their countries, and because those Muslims would be upset if they went to war with a Muslim country, that we couldn't even use the air bases we'd paid for. So now, my position has changed. I believe that NATO is an organization that has outlived its usefulness in either securing the peace, fighting Russia, or protecting the world from a radical Islamic nuclear threat. No NATO nation has actually spent the 5% in their own defense that they committed to. Not one. Meloni is my biggest disappointment. She has shown herself to be an insular protector of her own ass, and is letting her biggest ally go down the road of doing everything alone. I have had it with NATO. Let them open the strait of Hormuz. Let them develop defenses against Russia. Let them go it on their own instead of sucking on the teat of the US. Grow up, Europe. Enjoy going it alone, because that is what you've told us you want to do.
