Israeli comedian comes to the US, is concerned with being PC

Sylvain Ephimenco Jodenjacht, uitgeverij Ezo Wolf, is mijn twaalfde boek en is vanaf deze week verkrijgbaar. Ik ging net aan het voorwoord voor Jodenjacht beginnen toen dit bericht uit Frankrijk op mijn scherm verscheen. Een olijfboom die in een voorstad van Lyon was geplant ter nagedachtenis aan Ilan Halimi, een jonge Franse Jood die in 2006 werd doodgemarteld, is omgehakt. Het drama rond Ilan Halimi, 23 jaar, schokte heel Frankrijk in 2006 door zijn uitzonderlijkheid, maar vooral ook door zijn gruwelijkheid. Ilan Halimi, een verkoper van mobieltjes, werd in januari 2006 zomaar ontvoerd, opgesloten en zwaar gemarteld door een twintigtal personen die zichzelf ‘de bende van de barbaren’ (le gang des barbares) noemden. Zijn ontvoerders dachten van deze jonge Franse Jood dat hij ‘zoals alle Joden rijk moest zijn’. Het was niet de eerste keer dat een boom die ter nagedachtenis aan Ilan Halimi was geplant, werd omgezaagd. Vijf maanden eerder, in augustus 2025, gebeurde precies hetzelfde in Epinay-sur-Seine. Twee broers met Tunesische nationaliteit werden hiervoor veroordeeld. Het is de boodschap van de daders, gewapend met een eenvoudige cirkelzaag, aan een heel volk. ‘Jullie leed, hoe groot ook, hoe pijnlijk, hoe onverdraaglijk, zullen wij uitwissen. Evenals het korte bestaan van jullie martelaar. We zullen iedere vorm van herdenking vernietigen, onmogelijk maken. We zullen de toegang tot jullie verdriet met onze haat versperren.’ Het gebruik van het woord ‘genocide’ om de oorlog in Gaza te typeren, is in mijn ogen ook een poging om bomen van de herinnering om te zagen. Als je Joden van ‘genocide’ beschuldigt zaag je niet alleen de bomen om van hun herinnering. Wis je ook het proces dat de grondslag vormt voor de stichting van de Joodse staat Israël. Door de dood van tienduizenden Gazanen, veelal burgers en dat betreur ik, tijdens een oorlog tegen een terroristische beweging, impliciet gelijk te schakelen met de industriële vernietiging van zes miljoen Joden vorige eeuw, bereik je het eindpunt van het meest walgelijke revisionisme. Je zet de deur open voor de meest kwaadaardige beweringen. Het boek ‘Jodenjacht’ bevat de teksten die ik gedurende de twee jaar na Zeven Oktober in Trouw heb gepubliceerd. Het is een tijdsdocument, een kroniek van het weerzinwekkende antisemitisme die de laatste twee jaar in Nederland explodeerde. De voorbereidingen voor de huidige aanslagen op een synagoge in Rotterdam en een Joodse school in Amsterdam, vonden plaats in die twee jaar van ongebreideld antisemitisme, door pro-Palestijnse activisten gefaciliteerd. Ik heb wel nieuwe teksten voor dit boek geschreven. Ook het lange essay ‘Nederland liegt’ toegevoegd dat ik in 1994 publiceerde en dat toen ophef veroorzaakte. Het woord ‘Jodenjacht’ dat wel degelijk door Jodenjagers op 6 en 7 november in Amsterdam werd gebruikt tijdens aanvallen op Joodse voetbalsupporters uit Israël, lijkt nu taboe te zijn geworden. In bepaalde media is het gangbaar om ‘Maccabi-rellen’ te gebruiken in plaats van dit tienletterwoord dat wringt, schuurt en schaamte in zich draagt. Reden voor mij om dit woord als titel van dit boek te kiezen.

I say this as gently as I know how, because it seems to me unforgivably obvious. You cannot simultaneously build a strong international law system while also hating the West. International law is a Western idea born of a particular Western historical, cultural and political experience. And because God loves irony, no one exemplifies this fact more than the evil regime whose travails since yesterday have sparked so much legalistic hand-wringing. Both Khamenei himself and his teacher and predecessor Khomeini consistently and explicitly rejected international law as a tool of "global arrogance" (estekbar-e jahani) — i.e., of powerful secularist, individualistic democracies. Khamenei was even more explicit, routinely declaring legal frameworks like UN conventions as "colonial" traps. These declarations weren’t marginal to their ideology. They were fundamental planks of the regime’s political theology. I’ll say this, again, as gently as I can: The fact that international law and international institutions have transformed in practice into a system that more often than not runs defense for the most virulent and explicit enemies of said law might have something to do with their decline as an organizing framework of international affairs. For example, when UN agencies and international institutions target Israel more than Iran, or more than China, Iran and Russia put together, or more than all the dictatorships and wars in the world combined — they’re doing more harm to the law than to Israel. Similarly, it matters that so many of international law’s loudest spokespeople had nothing to say about Khamenei’s crimes just six weeks ago, but swung into action only when Khamenei’s long reign of terror was finally brought to an end. That’s not law. It’s the opposite of law. International law can be saved, but only if its scholars and practitioners grow up and shed the instinctive anti-Westernism and racist paternalism of the present-day academy. When international law is no longer seen by its own practitioners primarily as an instrument for containing, weakening and delegitimizing the West, but becomes genuinely about actual law, it will once again have a claim on us. If you fail to see in Khamenei the bitter foe of international law that he was, if in the midst of your legitimate critique of a war you can’t summon at least a little joy that this avowed enemy of your purported moral system is dead and gone, then you haven’t actually been fighting for international law.

Nu zelfs van origine links-progressieve kunstenaars en artiesten hartstochtelijk dit soort grafieken en hartekreten delen kan je je afvragen wat men in de basisinfrastructuur van intellectueel Nederland laat liggen tegenwoordig

Het is gekmakend idd! Het is niet alleen aandelen stijgen, aandelen dalen. Assets ‘stijgen in waarde’ omdat er zoveel geld bijgedrukt wordt dat er in feite gewoon sprake is van geldontwaarding. Die ‘winst’ is in feite gewoon grotendeels inflatie. En die wordt nu dus belast. Daarmee wordt je de kans ontnomen om je fatsoenlijk tegen inflatie beschermen.

Ik ben al de hele week ziek van alles wat ik over box 3 lees. Vooral dat wegwuiven van de problemen die het op zal leveren. Heisa, schrijft NOS. Wat begrijpt men niet? Aandelen stijgen, aandelen dalen. Het is geen tie-wrap. Je kan geen belasting innen op ongerealiseerde winst. De middenstand heeft geen enkel middel over om te sparen voor de oude dag. Je moet je maar zien te redden na je zeventigste. Ondernemers kunnen niks opzij leggen en zullen ook nog een deel verplicht moeten inleggen in onzinnige verzekeringen die pas na anderhalf jaar oid uitkeren terwijl covid liet zien dat de meeste ondernemers vooral dat eerste anderhalf jaar iets nodig hebben indien er problemen zijn. Grote ondernemers lopen weg. Nederlanders worden voor buitenlandse beleggers een liability want op tax pay day zullen ze in een gril of opwelling irrationeel verkopen. Wie wil dan nog Nederlanders als grootaandeelhouder? Nederland krimpt, wordt buiten gehouden, en de middenstand verdwijnt. Gen Z is de eerste generatie die dommer is dan eerdere generaties, lees ik, en dus ook aanzienlijk armer. En toch komt het eraan, komt het erdoorheen, hoor ik overal. Het begrotingsgat moet immers dicht. Want NAVO, defensie, energietransitie. Het moet toch ergens vandaan komen? Wat kan je doen behalve een beetje twitteren of Marcus Aurelius lezen? 'Heisa'

@adriaanmol Klopt helemaal. Je uitleg op LinkedIn was eigenlijk glashelder: dat ging over lange termijn incentives (ownership) om een level playing field te creëren, niet over een ‘graaicultuur’. Zoals het artikel eigenlijk impliceert. Jammer dat dat essentiële onderscheid in het artikel volledig wegvalt.

The closing of the live version of "Sultans of Swing" is one of the most memorable moments in Dire Straits' history. Recorded on "A Night in London" (1996), this performance features an instrumental ending of about three minutes that does not appear on the studio recording, and that's precisely where the magic happens.

I have spent the past few weeks talking to humanitarians in Gaza, anti-Hamas activists, human rights organizers, feminists, widows, divorced women, desperate civilians, people in tents, civilians barely getting by, youngsters, and a diverse cross-section of Gaza’s professional class. They all shared the hardships they have been experiencing as a result of the past two years of a devastating Israeli war that has decimated the coastal enclave and made it virtually unlivable for those picking up the pieces after the ceasefire. I have asked almost every single one of them: Why are we not seeing a mass anti-Hamas movement, and why are we not seeing large-scale uprisings against the terror group? Every single one has referenced the horror that Hamas carries out against those who have enough of a platform and dare speak out. Specifically, and disturbingly, they have each referenced the use of Gaza’s hospitals by Hamas as interrogation centers, and how the terror group threatens its opponents with “rods in their legs” if they dare open their mouths. They have described how Hamas has been breaking the legs of opponents, attacking tent occupants, kidnapping men, beating their mothers and sisters, and taking them to one of the three main hospitals: al-Shifa in Gaza City, Al Aqsa in Deir al-Balah, or Nasser in Khan Younis. Despite widespread public knowledge of what happens, none of the international humanitarian or “human rights” organizations have said anything about the horrendous human rights atrocities being committed by Hamas against the Palestinian people of Gaza. This is how many such organizations have become a joke, making a mockery of their so-called “activism.” The crimes being perpetrated against Palestinians are only relevant to these organizations when Israel is the culprit, and hardly ever if Hamas, the Islamist, fascist, terror organization, is involved. Some of the same organizations who regularly decry abuses by Islamist movements and anti-Western extremists in Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Sudan, or elsewhere, and the same who scream about gender-apartheid, freedom of expression, and the need to push back against dictatorial and absolutist regimes, are cowardly, and willingly, remaining silent, when it comes to the violence and atrocities of Hamas in the Strip. This is why “human rights” activism needs a serious makeover; this is why Hamas needs to be treated and considered as a human rights issue, and not only when seen through the lens of the very legitimate human rights abuses by Israel. Instead, everything has become this kind of blind obsession with calling out Israel, without understanding the evils that this Muslim Brotherhood-backed, Iranian Islamic Regime-financed terror entity is the ultimate enemy of the Palestinian people in Gaza and beyond. Shame on all of these fraudsters who are unable to hold multiple truths and who are asleep at the wheel now that there is a ceasefire in Gaza.

I keep seeing claims that there is a consensus among experts that Israel is committing genocide. There is certainly a campaign to create an impression of some such consensus, but there's no evidence that it exists, and moreover it would be surprising if it existed. Here's the situation: there is no consensus among the actual experts, i.e. international criminal lawyers. You can be confident that many of them would love to be on a defence team at the ICJ or ICC if Israel or particular Israelis were being tried for genocide. Moreover, such people don't usually go shooting their mouths off about guilt or innocence until all the evidence is available in court. Meanwhile, there are those of us in various adjacent fields (philosophy of law in my case - with a strong academic background in law, including a fair bit of study of international criminal law - human rights law, relevant fields of history, etc.). We can form our views based on whatever limited expertise we do have that might be relevant. I'll back my own admittedly limited expertise on this topic against a lot of so-called experts who are not always well-versed in international criminal law and in many cases have obvious ideological axes to grind. It's clear that a lot of these people are claiming that Israel is committing genocide while also sneaking in an expansive definition of genocide that does not match either the popular understanding of genocide (i.e. something like the Holocaust or Rwanda) or what is actually in the Genocide Convention and the case law of international criminal courts and tribunals. You can draw your own conclusions as to why they so many of them want to expand the concept of genocide beyond its established meaning once the people who are accused of it are Israelis.

Seeing the tens of thousands of Palestinians return to their homes in northern Gaza, one can only remember the endless accusations against Israel: that the war was about displacement, ethnic cleansing, settlements- that these are supposedly the 'real' aims. Now the war has ended, Israel sees itself as victorious, and none of these goals has been achieved. How is it possible? Here's the truth: Israel was trying to prevent Hamas from controlling Gaza and, primarily, trying to get its hostages back. I’ve spent so many words in international media explaining that this war could end in minutes if Hamas agrees to return the hostages. But that ship had long sailed; the war was not portrayed by most of the international journalists or politicians as a war at all. Israeli military casualties were almost never reported. It was presented as an onslaught, a massacre - no security aim, no reason, just death, reigned by Israelis with no purpose. Now, the hostages are returning, and the war has suddenly stopped. Will they remember that forgotten connection? Hostages were always at the heart of the legitimacy of the war- for Israel, the U.S., and the international community. True, far-right and some Likud elements in the Israeli government had other (dangerous) dreams. The Prime Minister allowed those to be discussed and addressed. Yet these were never the consensus or a real option. Recap: Hamas first refused to give up control of the Strip. Then, it refused to release hostages before full IDF withdrawal. It then refused disarmament. Now it agrees to all of these conditions. Echo chambers that cheered Hamas’s radical demands were obsessed with indicting Israel rather than ending the war and saving lives. With all my criticism of Netanyahu and the missed opportunities to end the conflict, this was never about endless war. I write this no to defend him, but to explain the Israeli society. one only needs to know Israelis and witness the scenes of joy now, with this ceasefire, to understand that this is a people that wanted their lives back. Mainly, they wanted the hostages home and to know Hamas isn't a threat anymore. President Trump, in a true demonstration of state-of-the-art statecraft, made it happen. He will forever be regarded as a hero in Israel. Those who amplified Hamas’s demands are now silent- or even condemning the agreement. For them, it’s never been about Palestinians. It’s about hating Israel and Zionism to the point of being willing to sacrifice the last Palestinian so that their argument demonizing Israel will prevail.

Het probleem is dat een aantal van deze fundamentele waarden gekaapt en opnieuw gedefinieerd worden. Dat is slim: wie kan er nu tegen inclusie of gelijke behandeling zijn? Maar juist de invulling van die termen wordt steeds selectiever. Inclusie betekent vaak niet dat iedereen mee mag doen, maar alleen groepen die in een onderdrukkingskader passen. Iemand met conservatieve opvattingen (of bijvoorbeeld een ‘Zionist’) valt daar al snel buiten. Gelijke behandeling voorstaan vereist inmiddels dat je a priori instemt met denkkaders rond white privilege, gender en het oppressor vs. oppressed-verhaal. Elke poging tot nuancering maakt je al snel “deel van het probleem”, en je wordt zonder pardon weggezet als een fascist of een nazi. Universiteiten zijn niet meer een plek waar iedereen ideeën kan inbrengen en toetsen via een open debat, maar een plek waar iedereen recht heeft op emotioneel comfort. Sprekers of docenten worden geweerd omdat hun gedachten mogelijk als “kwetsend” ervaren zouden kunnen worden, of simpelweg niet binnen de dominante opvatting passen. Deze waarden die jij aanhaalt: gelijke behandeling, bescherming tegen discriminatie (maar ook vrijheid van meningsuiting en later ook inclusie), zijn ooit ontwikkeld om ervoor te zorgen dat iedereen moest kunnen deelnemen, ongeacht afkomst of overtuiging. Ideeën moesten vrij kunnen worden getoetst in open debat. Dat is precies wat ze zo krachtig maakt. Ironisch genoeg worden diezelfde begrippen vandaag soms ingezet om de ruimte te versmallen: wie niet in het voorgeschreven denkkader past, wordt uitgesloten onder het mom van waarden die juist ooit bedoeld waren om uitsluiting te voorkomen.

@Leentje_Faraway @michiellieuwma @milambinho Met fundamentele waarden bedoel ik o.a. gelijke behandeling, bescherming tegen discriminatie, veiligheid en een leefbare toekomst. Dat zijn geen meningen, maar voorwaarden om mee te kunnen doen lijkt me.

Die morele superioriteit en die scheidsrechterachtigheid en dat vingertje van deze tweet, dit en dit van rechts tot daaraan toe, maar rechts moet wel oppassen hoor - want anders? Rechts pakt nu gewoon de macht, en links staat er gewoon bij te kijken, sterker nog een stevig deel van links is daar blij en opgelucht over omdat sommige dingen conserveren niet 'het kwaad' is, maar in het belang van zowel links en rechts, en omdat totalitair links een schrikbeeld is van vergelijkbare orde als het schrikbeeld waarvan links in 10 jaar tijd ongelofelijke inflatie heeft veroorzaakt
