In small towns few people have ever heard of, and in big cities whose names everyone knows, Christians gather every Sunday to hear the voice of the Lord from shepherds Christ has placed among them. Many years ago, I was one of those shepherds, serving a small flock in a small Oklahoma town. I was young and made many mistakes, but I still treasure my years with the saints in Wellston, Oklahoma. Those believers were extraordinarily good to me, and I pray that the shepherding I did among them was used by the Good Shepherd himself to bless them. I can think of no better name for the divinely appointed leader of a congregation than pastor, which is simply another way of saying shepherd. Again and again, the Bible refers to God’s people as sheep and lambs. We see it today in Jeremiah 23, which we read in Bible in One Year. But that chapter also reminds us that not every shepherd is a good shepherd. In Jeremiah’s day, many shepherds were destroying and scattering the sheep of God’s flock instead of caring for them. The best pastors are always doing one thing: leading the flock to the Good Pastor himself, to Jesus. One of the oldest and most beloved images in Christian art is that of Jesus carrying a lost sheep upon his shoulders, such as the image accompanying this post, from a 3rd century catacomb in Italy. At one time or another, and usually many times over, we have all been that lost sheep: confused, wandering, vulnerable to the wolf. And then Jesus comes for us. He finds us, lifts us up, rejoices over us, and carries us home. Today, I am blessed to gather with a congregation here in Tyler, TX, under two shepherds who continually lead us to the Good Shepherd himself. I pray you have found a pastor like that, too, the kind of pastor who, no matter where we are in life, always leads us to the source of life itself: Jesus Christ. He is the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. He is the Lamb who lives and reigns forever. And he is the Shepherd who laid down his life for the sheep.

Jeder 10.

Tax the rich!
