My colleague said he tried to punish his wife by refusing to eat her food for 4 days after they had a misunderstanding. He stopped touching anything she cooked… but kept dropping money for food at home. For 4 days straight, this woman didn’t question him. Every day, she cooked, served his food, placed it on the table… The next day, she would throw it away and place another one. We told him to settle with her, and he finally did. After reconciling, he asked her, “Why didn’t you even bother that I wasn’t eating your food?” She told him; “You’re not a baby. As Igbo people, it’s important we know and use the names that belong to us. Language is identity, and the moment we start replacing our words, we slowly lose pieces of who we are. It’s called Akwa-otu, not asoebi. It’s called Agwa, not ewa. It’s called Udara, not agbalumo. It’s called Ichafu, not gele. It’s called Ogiri, not iru. It’s called Utara, not eba. It’s called Ofe Nsala, not white soup. It’s called Ofe akwu, not banga stew. The list goes on. We don’t have to abandon our language to be understood. Say it in Igbo, and if needed, explain it. That’s how culture is preserved. That’s how identity survives.
