Don’t forget, not that long ago there was an article put out that stated Kentucky had “Scrooge McDuck” money. Mitch Barnhart‘s athletic program has run around saying how much money we have so there’s no way we should get out bid right? The other problem is, you told every agent in the country that you have “Scrooge McDuck” money which emboldened them to milk you for every penny. No matter what happens. This entire administration needs to rethink the idiocy they’re putting out in public.

Hey Matt @KySportsRadio first time long time. You think Kentucky could hire a guy to shake the bed so Mark Pope can finish? Imma hang up and listen.

@BRamseyKSR We will just have to disagree because we have no depth at the power forward position. You gotta have that and then hopefully you get Freeman and if not, then you move on to another option. I just think Rancik would’ve been perfect for Popes system. Hes better than Jelavik ?

Two points I want to make based on some responses I’ve gotten + other comments online. 1) Missing on Donnie Freeman does not mean Kentucky should have taken Sebastian Rancik. I will defend them on that. He wasn’t moving the needle enough. That would have been a panic/bird in the hand play. “Rolling the dice” with Freeman, even now after missing on him, was worth it in my opinion. 2) Comments about “complaining about overpaying last year and now complaining about not overpaying this year” make me laugh. Not even SORT OF the same thing. The issue last year was Kentucky overpaid for depth and role players. I’m ALL FOR “overpaying” for STARS. Dudes who raise your ceiling. Maybe the evaluation on who those guys are is wrong, but that’s a different conversation. “Overpay” for your top three guys. Find “value” elsewhere.

@tyrese1717 So, bidding 3.5 million is “avoiding overpaying (and prioritizing) system fits.” You don’t even scratch 3.5 million if that’s your strategy. Dude can’t recruit and the ones he can, he can’t coach.

Pope can’t win with our fair weather fanbase, the issues that we had with last years roster construction is exactly what he’s trying to avoid with this years (injuries, overpaying, system fits) yet he’s catching flame for not overpaying for an injury prone forward, good lord.

While bleak, it’s not over. Kentucky has the money to try and attract Draft entrees and euro options. This offseason goes to show why you have to build teams with retention, HS recruiting, AND the transfer portal. If you rely too heavily on one, you’re at a disadvantage.
Tristan Pharis@TristanUda

Kentucky has missed out on Dink Pate, Rob Wright, and Donnie Freeman, three of their top 7-8 targets this offseason. I’m usually in the “let it play out” camp, but with a not so deep portal and most top options already off the board, things are looking bleak for UK’s roster.

@TristanUda @TristanUda I have Donnie Freeman fatigue. Fanbase has shown him so much love and UK has offered him so much money and we’ve been used as leverage. Snag McBride and Williams-Adams and build out the rest of your roster. Not begging to overpay for injury history & motor issues.

Kentucky put themselves in a tough spot by missing in HS recruiting and leaning heavily on the portal. Now, they are pursuing a top 20 forward in Donnie Freeman, with a noticeable drop to the next tier of players. Pay him, and it feeds the “overpaying” narrative. Miss, and it’s viewed as another whiff.

My take on this… When the $22 million roster got thrown out last season Kentucky lost a lot of their leverage. Now, guys ask for the moon on campus and/or want to be able to shop their offer post-visit. Simply an educated guess, but I can totally see that being an issue.
Jason@jason_redsfan

@BRamseyKSR It’s frustrating because other schools are getting kids on campus and lock them up before they leave. For whatever reason, Pope doesn’t seem capable of that.

@KSRonX @KSRTHESHOW @JackPilgrimKSR If you would’ve told me a week ago, we we could conceivably sign Zoom and Donnie, I’d be elated. What drives me crazy are the optics that we can’t get sign our clear #1 priorities (often times for more money). Pope needs a GM and ish to him.

@KySportsRadio So, the narrative is that NIL is the recruiting driver, but somehow, we have “Scrooge McDuck $” and by appearance, either being leveraged for more elsewhere or what we offer financially just isn’t enough. We need a coach with ish to him. I wanna see the Will Stein counterpart.

@LegacyBlue_UK I don’t think he’s a great recruiter, his system attracts and he was the flavor of the month when hired. Since, he’s proven to be incompetent in his ability to adjust in-game and largely been exposed to not handle the job well. Despite all that, money is the recruiter now in NIL

Kobie Brea chose Mark Pope, loved the team and didn't want to take off the jersey. Other top schools were after him and some of y'all still say he can't recruit.

@BRamseyKSR I’m all about exercising patience in most of these transfer portal recruitment scenarios, but Mark Pope really hasn’t earned credit for that much patience considering his track record of inability to secure big recruits. I’m not a fan of waiting up to 2 weeks more for Stokes.

The Tyran Stokes recruitment has been a difficult one all along and that is no different after his visit unfortunately. Kentucky also didn’t get Rob Wright III committed while on campus, but landing either him or Zoom Diallo VERY soon seems likely. Donnie Freeman is on campus now. Admittedly, I think it is fair to say the first 48 hours or so of this MASSIVE week haven’t gone great…but in recruiting everything can change SO quickly and none of these guys have decided one way or another. I understand why Coach Pope may no longer have the benefit of the doubt, but we are still too early in the process to truly panic. Let’s let it play out and let these guys make their decisions!
