SlabSquatch Sports Cards
Origin of the Squatch After the monumental appearance on the Sports Cards Nonsense podcast @SCN_Pod this week (shoutout Mike Gio), I know what many of you are thinking... “That guy looks significantly less big and hairy than expected.”. So for anyone that cares, I figured I'd dive into a little back story and give you the "Origin of the Squatch". Being in the KC area, I've had Chiefs season tickets since 2013. For a several years, I was at just about every game, including some huge playoff games. Somewhere around 2019, we had a night game right around Halloween. If you’ve ever been to one, you know… people go all in. On a whim, and because I’m a bit of a conspiracy theory nut, I thought it would be funny to grab a Jack Link’s Sasquatch costume and wear it to the game. The response was ridiculous. I’m not exaggerating when I say I took 75+ photos with random people that night. And right there… the alter ego was born. Like any good Chiefs regular, I leaned into it. Threw on Chiefs gear, kept showing up, and “ChiefSquatch” became a thing. And it kinda took off. Now, please don't confuse me with the notorious wolf they call "Chiefsaholic". Though we were in some commercial shoots together, I had nothing to do with his wayward decision to rob banks to fund his super-fandom. The Squatch was humbled by all the photo requests, recognition, even fans from other teams wanting pics. At one point, I met a woman in public who, once she found out who I was, told me they made a custom Christmas ornament from a photo her husband took with the Squatch. This dumb idea actually had legs. After 4 or 5 years, after a million awesome memories and just as many fan photos, a couple commercial shoots, a full replacement costume, a "SantaSquatch" alter-alterego, and a LilSquatch for good measure, I retired the costume. The costume had lived its life, and honestly… it’s exhausting being a cryptid. You can’t check your fantasy teams on your phone with massive hairy vinyl hands. You can barely talk through the giant hairy head. You need help even for simple tasks like getting a drink. And it turns out your game-day crew (shoutout Mrs. Squatch) doesn’t love babysitting a 9-foot hairy liability for 10-12 hours at a time (we start early on game day). Around that same time, I was getting deeper into sports cards. So instead of starting fresh with some generic name… I brought the Squatch with me. And that’s how “SlabSquatch” was born. Which brings us to today… a weird amalgamation of nerd, Neanderthal, stat geek, sports card addict, and retired interdimensional Chiefs superfan-cryptid. Even if I don’t quite look the part in real life. Though I still have those season tickets. They're not going anywhere. I genuinely appreciate all of you who follow along. It still blows me away that people care about any of this.

What a memory. 👏 This collector's father sadly passed away last week due to complications from Parkinson's disease. During the morning of the day he passed, the two spent time together at their local card show. Unbeknownst to them, someone from the show happened to capture the special moment of the father-son duo. "Glad I was digging for 15 cent Brewer singles at the right time." The hobby spans generations. RIP, Mr. Huck. 📸: Garrett Huck / @SCN_Pod FB
