I recently read the biography of Wilbur Ross, the former Rothschild banker turned Commerce Secretary during Trump 1.0. Early in his career Trump went on a ruthless media campaign against Ross. So how did they become friends? Turns out Ross was just a vehicle Trump used to get messages to a group of people he actually needed to influence. The TACO Democrats always point to times Trump threatened something and backed down. MAGA always points to threats he followed through on, saying “he told you exactly what would happen.” The disconnect is simple: nobody asks who the intended audience is. Sometimes the message is for the person, organization, or nation in the post. Sometimes it’s for a group not mentioned directly. In the latter case, I’m told he back channels to the actual target separately. If you’re wrong about who the message is intended for, of course it looks like a TACO. But here’s the thing: some groups you can’t attack directly. The media or political fallout would be catastrophic. Sometimes the only way to deliver the message is to shout it at someone else entirely.
