@AjayResearchLab Good universities have the confidence to evaluate the quality of their faculty members’ publications and they do do it as you suggest.

I was at Cardiff. I was told that their department now looks at tenure/promotion cases based on the quality of the papers. No impact factors/Q1-2../citation. Departments have a wide range of academics. Why can't we judge top 3-5 papers on its merits? Do we really need metrics?

@gabrielpeyre A poor man's version is with complex numbers: f(a+ib) = f(a) + ibf'(a) + O(b²). If b is taken to be close to machine precision and f is analytic, then b² = 0 for all practical purposes.

Students of elasticity spend much time with plane strain and plane stress deformation. We learn Airy's stress function. In this review, Meleshko quoted extensively the correspondences between Airy, Stokes, Rankine, and Maxwell. Maxwell was Reviewer 2.😀 tinyurl.com/2p849syv

@RuobingB I used it recently to help me recall how to prove Jensen’s inequality. It gave me an incorrect proof but the underlying approach was correct and I was then able to construct my own proof.

I started seriously using ChatGPT in academic work recently. I realize that this can be a great tool as long as I know what I am doing. Quoting one of my colleagues: "it is like talking to a drunk person who can keep chatting with you for 24 hours with mixed information."
