@NguyenLabJHU Thanks! It was fun to work with you and your students on this paper.
English

@SGovindjee @NguyenLabJHU @CretonCost Congratulations for the really nice work! Thanks for your interest in our experiments.
English

Finally uploaded our report with the @NguyenLabJHU group on finite elements for liquid crystal elastomers, some of which was completed while visiting @CretonCost at ESPCI. It includes a simulation of @ShengqiangCai 's great LCE balloon experiment.

@AjayResearchLab Good universities have the confidence to evaluate the quality of their faculty members’ publications and they do do it as you suggest.

Returning home from the @Cal_Engineer @BerkeleyCee @NHE_SimCenter #NHERICompSym meeting at the @luskinhotella at @UCLA . I was great to see how much the SimCenter has grown in the past year under Matt DeJong's new leadership along with Greg Deierlein.

@DennisKochmann @IMES_ETHZ Thanks for the opportunity to give the talk! I greatly enjoyed the discussion. Always nice to be back at ETH.
English

Thanks very much to @SGovindjee for an inspiring seminar on liquid crystal elastomers @IMES_ETHZ!

@zhigangsuo @CranfordMATTER @zhigangsuo I see that we are academic 5th Cousins Once Removed 😉 [common academic relation being Felix Klein]
English

Thank you @CranfordMATTER for noticing this academic genealogy. It went back to Felix Klein, Carl Gauss, and Friedrich Leibniz.😀

@EnduricaWill @EnduricaTom Making a stop in Paris? Let me know and stop by ESPCI.

On the ground in Lux today and making trouble with @EnduricaTom. Ready for business tomorrow and for #rubbercon2023 later in the week ...

@kebabroyal_ @gabrielpeyre Not so poor man's, since if your programming language supports complex numbers then there is not extra programming required for special data types.
English

@gabrielpeyre A poor man's version is with complex numbers: f(a+ib) = f(a) + ibf'(a) + O(b²). If b is taken to be close to machine precision and f is analytic, then b² = 0 for all practical purposes.

Dual number is a convenient way to implement forward mode of automatic differentiation. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_numb…

@zhigangsuo @dpholmes @ShuYangPenn @ghpaulino Here is another interesting one from Eliot Fried's group which I made from a template that he sent me (groups.oist.jp/mmmu/mobius-ka…); see also sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Kinetic origami?
I need to follow the instruction and see how it works.
Any insight?

I had fun making my own version this object (which the internet seems to call an "infinity cube"). Instructions in the following tweets.

@zhigangsuo A visit to the royal observatory in Greenwich is recommended to learn about the Airy family.
English

Students of elasticity spend much time with plane strain and plane stress deformation.
We learn Airy's stress function.
In this review, Meleshko quoted extensively the correspondences between Airy, Stokes, Rankine, and Maxwell.
Maxwell was Reviewer 2.😀

@RuobingB I used it recently to help me recall how to prove Jensen’s inequality. It gave me an incorrect proof but the underlying approach was correct and I was then able to construct my own proof.

@zhigangsuo @LallitAnand The nice cover photo was courtesy of Chaoyi Zhu, Shiteg Zhao, and Andy Minor from @Cal_Engineer and @BerkeleyLab; it's an electron backscatter diffraction map of a shocked CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy.

The new book by @LallitAnand, Ken Kamrin, @SGovindjee arrived today. The authors state that the book is for a course for undergraduate juniors and seniors. Topics include
Elasticity
Plasticity & creep
Fracture & fatigue
Viscoelasticity
Rubber elasticity
