Finally got round to seeing the returning Lesser Scaup at Staines Reservoirs over the weekend. Also got the Black Redstart, my first one up there! And great to see the 2 Great Northern Divers and pairs of Black-necked Grebes displaying.

With all this gloomy weather, it's been a challenge to relocate my local breeding pair of firecrests from last year. I'm hoping with a bit of sun they'll turn up! It was a pleasure watching them raise 2 young, I'd love to see them succeed again. @bucksbirdclub @bucksbirdnews

Just received ringing data back on this juvenile Black Stork (69X9) that I observed near Saedinenie, Plovdiv, BULGARIA on both 25th August and 9th September 2024. Ringed as a chick in a nest of 3 young on 24th June 2024 near Lužnice, CZECHIA 🇨🇿 It travelled at least 1,068km!

Encountered a few interesting butterflies near the Maritsa River in Pazardzhik #Bulgaria today. Freyer’s Purple Emperor (Apatura metis) and Common Glider (Neptis sappho). @europebutterfly

@sferguk For example, look at this Arctic Tern from last spring at Staines Res. Notice the complete set of translucent primaries.

@sferguk Shaun sorry to say but looks like a Common. Only inner primaries are translucent on this bird, Arctic Tern would always have all of its primaries being translucent. Also, a longer head and neck profile than Arctic and a diffuse black bar on underside of prim. (distinct in Arctic)
