In 1975, the Social Security Administration introduced the direct deposit program for the payment of benefits. For the first time, an electronic funds transfer payment, commonly known as direct deposit, could be sent to an account at a financial institution.

Spousal benefits were first introduced in 1939, just four years after the Social Security Act was signed into law, allowing spouses and minor children of retired workers to receive benefits and expanding financial security for families

Social Security numbers were first issued in November 1936. As of early August 2025, 548.3 million different numbers had been issued.

SSA at 90: Ida May Fuller from Ludlow, Vermont was the first recipient of monthly Social Security benefits.

The Social Security Act was signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 14, 1935. Taxes were collected for the first time in January 1937 and the first one-time, lump-sum payments were made that same month. Regular ongoing monthly benefits started in January 1940.

SSA Commissioner Bisignano joined @MariaBartiromo this morning to talk about the significant improvements made to customer service over the past three months. “We’ve taken wait times from the last administration on the phones, which averaged 30 minutes, to last week 5 minutes.”

Today, SSA released the following statement following Commissioner Bisignano's meeting with @SenWarren: “Commissioner Bisignano had a productive meeting with Senator Warren where he presented improved customer service metrics that are currently being realized on the phone, in field offices, and online. Senator Warren reacted positively to many of the indicators, specifically lower phone and field office wait times, the reduction of the disability claims backlog by 25%, and the speed at which the SSFA payments were completed – 5 months ahead of schedule. Commissioner Bisignano agreed with Senator Warren’s suggestion to have SSA OIG audit the numbers he provided to the Senator, which were prepared using long-held measurement methodology by the dedicated federal workforce at SSA.”

SSA is reducing backlogs ⬇️ Decreasing the initial disability claims backlog by 25%, from a record high of 1.2 million cases pending last summer to 950,000 cases pending today. Achieving a historic low of approximately 276,000 disability hearings pending, with customers experiencing wait times 60 days shorter than last summer. (4/5)
