I’ve just finished reading this book right through in a few hours. It’s scholarly but well written, entertaining, fascinating and disturbing read- very compelling. It’s mainly focussed on the witch trials of the 16-17th centuries but it also covers later examples of persecutions, even to the present day. There are case studies and the vivid portraits of the victims bring them to life and we get a true picture of the monstrous injustice inflicted upon these innocent women. In my personal view, it is very clear from the Scottish witch trial evidence that a toxic combination of misogyny, religious fundamentalism in a patriarchal society, plus a deep belief in the power of magic, all combined to sanction judicial murder. I think it would be foolish to think we are immune from this ever happening again.

Male class solidarity isn’t wild. It’s what happens when individuals value both their individuality and collective power above all else. What’s wild is that women, the ones who SHOULD have adopted this way hundreds of years ago as we have the most reason to, willfully haven’t.
