🚨 Igor Tudor: “It was the right call to play Kinsky. He’s an important goalkeeper. Then what happens next has no explanation”. “I never seen anything like this in 15 years”. “I changed Kinsky to help him… it’s a bad moment as everything is going in wrong direction for us”.

NUFC-MUFC 2-1 What happened?
🔺United had a game plan that wasn’t half bad to start with. Sit deep and counter. Not exciting, but not half bad to get points.
🔺After Newcastle gets a player sent off — we naturally want to change strategy. Go from sitting deep to controlling the game.
We were — very poor — at executing that.
🔺Our short build up is just planless / simplistic. Far too often we end up being pressured to send a ball long. It can function when Martinez is on the pitch due to his brilliance — but he is out far too often.
This must improve. And given the amount of time we have had training lately — it all sums up to more than a normal pre season in training days — it is just concerning that we haven’t laid any foundation in this regard.
🔺Many questioned why Ugarte came on — but it was a good substitute by Carrick. Why?
Our defense is completely unable to play a high block. Newcastle dropped down deep during the build up — just like all our opponents have done lately — and simply outnumbered us despite being a man down. When Casemiro came off, we had Ugarte pressing instead evening things out.
🔺But the fact that we play such a deep defense is concerning. Teams can and will adjust and exploit that in the long run.
🔺Another issue is our lack of width on the pitch. When Cunha came out wide, he was dangerous. I think it’s concerning that he wasn’t out wide more often. It is concerning for several reasons. Doesn’t he follow instructions? Does Carrick want him to invert?
We get no room centrally when Cunha goes in there too, it gets way too crowded. Since Dorgu was hurt — our CM has stopped getting room centrally. There is no space for Mainoo. And the fact that Dorgu is hurt is no legit “excuse” for it.
🔺Again — I think we were showing significant signs of being tired after playing two games in one week.
Mbuemo is one example. He isn’t used to that. His touch can be spotless — then when he has played a little more, he is fumbling balls. Cunha was on today, but he has showed signs of tiring in the past.
When playing in Europe — we will play two games a week non-stop without any break from mid September to March. Maybe I am overly negative — but I am afraid of our team imploding under those circumstances without significant additions in the summer. We live on individual brilliance. If that brilliance tires — it won’t be easy for us to win a single game. We can easily go from being top 5/8 to bottom 10.
🔺I have to say this — giving Maguire a new contract with the intention to keep playing him a lot is very short sighted.
You can never have too many CBs and Maguire is valuable on set pieces coming on late. I of course don’t mind having him around in a Johnny Evans role. But we need much better play making ability on the pitch and ability to play a higher line.
🔺Everyone are evaluating Michael Carrick at the moment.
I do not think it’s easy.
He has done some things really really well. 100%. The balance he is able to create that gives us a chance to win games is fascinatingly effective. And let’s not forget, we have issues in the XI. 100%.
Is it Carrick’s fault that we are playing an uber-deep line? He can do that or bench Maguire and play Heaven-Yoro. If he has played a high line, we might sit here being 2-4-2 in our last 8.
On the other side — I can’t lie. I fear that we are starting to see clear tendencies of “Frank Lampard” or “Steven Gerrard” level coaching at times. The game is ever developing. Fergie ball in 2010 was very different from Fergie ball in 1995. A manager like Guardiola and other top managers are constantly adjusting, finding ways to exploit opponents, finding ways to prevent opponents from exploiting them.
Lampard, Gerrrard and co just had strategies that were 10-15 years outdated. This post is long enough, so I won’t go into details. But take Kobbie Mainoo today — he is so so stationary. Compare this with how Enrique is utilizing Joao Neves finding open space.
