@SaraBeLong

I teach Grade 6 Literacy and I think I have the greatest job in the world. I'm always looking for new and improved strategies to use in my classroom.

@ShelfieTalk A5 - This is an important book for our students to ensure that they feel seen and connected. It's a story of hope and a mirror for many. #shelfietalk

@ShelfieTalk A4 - I will read this aloud to my students and invite them to share their reactions and ideas with each other. Great for cross-curricular. #shelfietalk

@ShelfieTalk A3 - "Come on, he says, let's go down to see the owner together." I love how dad is talking to his daughter about going to the laundromat together. It shows us that 'together', we can accomplish great things. We were never meant to do all the things alone. #shelfietalk

@ShelfieTalk A8 - Thank you, Georgia. You have deepened my thinking about the human connection provided through poetry and how much we all need it. #shelfietalk

@ShelfieTalk A7 - I have read some poems by Amanda Gorman, Jack Prelutsky (fun ones!) and Kenn Nesbitt lately and the students like them. They are also loving Grant Snider's books. #shelfietalk

@ShelfieTalk A6 - I love all of her ideas and will incorporate many! I definitely love using poems as quick writes. I want to try her "poems on desks" idea and poetry stations in the near future! #shelfietalk

@SaraBeLong Have you read Ross Gay's Book of Delights? I've found it has really inspired me to think about a practice of noticing. He challenges himself to capture a daily delight in his writer's notebook. #ShelfieTalk

@ShelfieTalk A4 - Poetry offers students an opportunity to share deep thoughts and feelings in ways that other writing doesn't. It's magical when they write from their heart. This builds connection. #shelfietalk

@ShelfieTalk A3 - Through poetry, we attend to hearts and humanity by creating opportunities for kids to share in others' experiences while allowing them to share theirs.

@ShelfieTalk A2 - I used to think poetry was best taught in a unit, but now that I have read Awakening the Heart, I think it should be a daily habit. #shelfietalk
