Scalby Beck. During the Ice Age, glaciers blocked the River Derwent. To stop catastrophic flooding, the "Sea Cut" canal (1800–1804)was built. It connects the inland river to Scalby Beck, routing raging floodwaters safely over 135ft of weirs to the North Sea.
