Brian Tracy said something that stuck with me. In 6,000 years of commerce — from the open markets of ancient Sumeria to today — customers have only ever bought one thing. Not a product. Not a technology. Not a brand. One thing. The same thing. For six thousand years. Once I understood what it was, it changed how I build everything. Do you know what it is?

ASEAN is usually the last market on the list when people talk about new consumer tech. But Netflix penetration in Malaysia. Spotify in Indonesia. Grab across the region. Monthly subscriptions for things people used to own outright. Four senses already streaming. The fifth is sitting on a shelf. When does that change? Photo: Andreas Maier on Unsplash

You probably have 3-5 active subscriptions right now. Netflix. Spotify. Grab. Maybe a food delivery app. Sight, hearing, touch, taste — all covered by something you pay monthly for. Malaysia. Indonesia. Thailand. Vietnam ran this shift faster than most markets people actually talk about. Smell is the only sense still shipping in a glass bottle. Why?

There's a pattern I keep noticing. QR payments. RFID in transit. Touchless vending. Japan ran these years before anyone else normalized them. But digital scent diffusion is a Japanese technology. And ASEAN's 5G just hit threshold. Maybe I'm pattern-matching too hard. Maybe this one's different. What do you think?

The perfume industry moves $60B a year through glass bottles, freight, and retail shelves — the same way it did a century ago. Music went through this exact transition. The product didn't change. The delivery model did. And when it did, the industry didn't shrink — it grew bigger than ever. Scent is next. The technology exists. The patent is filed. The platform is live. The only question left is timing — and if you look at what's happening in ASEAN right now, the answer is closer than most people think.

Everyone asks about the token. Nobody asks about the pipes. When Spotify launched, nobody invested in "music tokens." They invested in the infrastructure — the licensing, the codec, the delivery network, the subscription engine. The token came later. It followed from usage. We built the pipes first. A patented diffuser. A scent streaming platform — Scentdays — that's already live. Our own DEX so we don't depend on someone else's exchange. A subscription model that generates recurring revenue. Then the token. Infrastructure first. Hype never. That's why this takes longer than people want. And that's why it will last longer than people expect.

In 2001, if you wanted to hear a song, you drove to a store and bought a disc. In 2003, you downloaded a file. By 2008, you streamed it. Sight followed the same path. Then touch. Then taste — through delivery platforms that replaced the restaurant visit. Four senses, digitalised in twenty years. The fifth one — smell — never made the jump. Not because nobody wanted it. Because nobody could encode it. In 2023, Google published a principal odour map — the first machine learning model to predict how a molecule smells from its structure. The encoding problem, for the first time, had a computational answer. In Japan, a company called Horizon had already built the hardware. 12 base cartridges. 10,000+ scent profiles. A diffuser that receives a data file and outputs a fragrance — the way a speaker receives an audio file and outputs sound. The delivery system for the fifth sense exists. It's not a concept. It's patented, built, and commercially live. We're deploying it.
