Medicine is the only profession where people willingly give up their youth to study for twelve years beyond high school while accumulating interest on $300K worth of student debt, only to be told they’re:
1) Pharma Shills
2) Doing it all wrong
3) Unsafe without supervision from folks with a fraction of the training
As thanks, Doctors work nights, weekends & holidays, pay thousands out of pocket for ever increasing “merit badges” like “maintenance of certification”…
And still have to ask for permission to prescribe drugs or perform a procedure….from people who aren’t at the bedside.
Those bureaucrats also give them 10-15 minutes to spend with each patient, while documenting minutiae that is completely irrelevant to care.
They top off the week with uncompensated documentation time so hospitals can make more money off of their work.
God forbid they prescribe an opioid…
That’s career ending.

Let them practice medicine without Monday morning quarter backing from administrators, insurance companies, malpractice lawyers, the academy & the state. It’s a perfect storm for the medical profession. At the moment, doctors have all of the liability and none of the autonomy to treat patients.

Autism: “The spectrum has become so accommodating that I fear that it has now been stretched so far that it has become meaningless and is no longer useful as a medical diagnosis.” Problem is that psychologists, and increasingly a flood of master’s level therapists have come to rely on the autism diagnosis to support their practice. Their livelihood. I suspect schools face a similar reliance on autism diagnoses for extra funding. Furthermore: Parents love it because their child gets extra services. Students love it because it makes them special. Drug companies love it because they profit from drugs. Psychologists are supposed to be the gatekeepers on diagnoses, but we are not doing very well at it.

Universities lobbied to make student loans unlimited. And it worked. Schools that had become for rich dumb kids were suddenly swimming in money because anyone could go.
Tuitions doubled every 9 years.
Now students are swimming in debt, for degrees like Philosophy of Biology.
