Interesting (I hope) for fellow fans of James Stewart of Goodtrees (1635-1713): many of #PrivyCouncil's endmost C18th meetings were held in his lodgings rather than Holyroodhouse. Imo, this speaks to the increasing volume of govt business dumped @ Lord Advocate's door after 1692.

Have said it before, but work I've being doing today has reminded me: the blasphemy trial of Thomas Aikenhead (1696-7) was one of the weirdest Scottish criminal trials in the whole of the early modern period. Bizarre and unprecedented from start to finish.

Sort of have a love-hate thing for these volumes now… but I definitely love them more when I get to work them in person!

“Margaret Kay, a Horsewoman” Named among 30 horsemen and footmen cited as witnesses before Privy Council in 1701. How usual was this?

Lots of decreets of deprivation of parish ministers by the @ScotCouncil in autumn 1689. Was something going on?
