@particleist Ditch the smartphone. CERN stores offers the CAT B40 H 45 which looks indestructible.

So in today's episode of "technological progress does not automatically make everything better" I'm going to whinge about the phones we carry when acting as on-call support for our experiments 🧵

LHCb collaboration week started with Luciano Maiani discussing tetra- and pentaquarks. This is the first fully in-person collaboration meeting since Feb 2020

@rayrfleming @CburgesCliff @WKCosmo The whole point is that CP violation is not large enough at the current energy scales to explain why we are in a matter-dominated universe. So we need to go to higher energies and for that we need colliders like CERN, to understand the physics of the early universe

@rayrfleming @CburgesCliff @WKCosmo When you collide protons together at high energies lots of different particles: protons and electrons among others. Measuring CP violation is essentially looking at how particles decay relative to antimatter equivalents to understand how we live in a matter-dominated universe.

@CburgesCliff @WKCosmo Some of the money being wasted at CERN would be better spent on experiments to study how protons and electrons are produced without antimatter.

Interesting to read about the origins of the laws making charges of crimes against humanity possible. I hope the crime of aggression also becomes written into law soon ‘theguardian.com/law/2022/mar/3…

@angryfermion Clearly should be the precession of the perihelion of mercury. General relativity is one of the most beautiful branches of physics IMO

@particleist Agreed. No sane person wants a war between NATO and Russia. But the most likely way for that to happen is through a miscalculation. The mass condemnation of the invasion crippling the economy and the fightback from Ukrainians has IMO made a further miscalculation less likely

@Sean1987 Re: big picture, everything Putin has done since at least 2014 in Ukraine has been a strategic disaster for Russia, even (perhaps especially) on his own terms. Ukraine obviously has to defend itself. None of that changes the reality that NATO must not get into a shooting war here

I think a lot of people don't seem to understand that Russia isn't Serbia. I hope the difference dawns on them before we all die in a mushroom cloud.

@particleist The point is the bigger picture. Putin lives in a parallel world where he can support brexit+an idiot in the Whitehouse in the hope that NATO becomes an impotent alliance. Showing the emperor has no clothes is the best way to oppose war. Ukraine are defending their homes and ours

@Sean1987 I've been there and I absolutely would have not wanted Russia trying to fight the US on our behalf in 1999. And I think the predictions of a much bigger war later miss the point. Russia cannot & won't even win this war, but what they can do is rm -rf earth. Hell of a bet to take.

@particleist All wars end in political settlements, but Putin wants to negotiate that when he is in a stronger position. If Ukraine is not supported now there will be a much bigger war later. I am also opposed to wars but if the army of a dictator was indiscriminately shelling my family...

@Sean1987 I think there is no alternative to a political settlement, but the burden of proof is not on people like me who opposed every war of aggression for three decades regardless of who waged it. The burden of proof is on the "do something" brigade to show they won't end life on earth.
