"If it's public, you have no privacy claim over it." Reddit is suing Anthropic over scraped posts. Getty sued over watermarked images, scraped. A suit against OpenAI cites biometric and children's data, scraped. Public was never the same as consent to reuse.

"Opting out is hard because the tools don't exist yet." Brokers put no-index code on their own opt-out pages so search engines couldn't find them. It took a Senate investigation to make them remove it. The friction was never missing infrastructure. It was the infrastructure.

"If you have nothing to hide, sharing your data costs you nothing." Sharing is never free. It's just a cost paid later, by someone else's decision, using information you can't take back.

"Privacy is only for people hiding something." So is a locked door. So is a curtain. So is an unlisted number. Protection is being re-framed as "hiding". Locks were never about guilt. They were always about who gets to decide who enters.

"You agreed to the terms of service." Nobody reads 8,000 words to use a flashlight app. Consent isn't real when refusing it means you can't function. That's not agreement. That's a toll booth.

Mark Zuckerberg's Hawaii estate has its own private police force. You get a privacy policy nobody reads, written by lawyers paid to make sure you can't sue. Same word structure. Wildly different budget.

You were told the internet would democratize information. It did. It also generalized surveillance, centralized it in the hands of five companies, and built a business model on the gap between what you know about them and what they know about you.

The companies that profit most from collecting your data spend the most on lobbying to prevent laws that would let you see, correct, or delete it. The investment tells you what the data is worth. If it weren't worth much, protecting it would be cheap.

"The platform doesn't know what you're thinking." It knows what you searched. What you typed and deleted. How long you hovered before scrolling. What you screenshot. What you read twice. It doesn't know your thoughts. It knows everything that surrounds them.

"Wanting to be untracked is antisocial." Migratory birds are untracked. Wild animals are untracked. Most of human history was untracked. Tracking is not the natural state. It's an infrastructure built in the last 20 years and declared inevitable by the people profiting from it.

The largest data brokers have no consumer-facing product. You have never heard their names. You have never agreed to their terms. You have never seen their interface. They know where you live, what you earn, what you owe, and what you're likely to do next.

"Worrying about digital privacy is a first world problem." Tell that to the journalist whose source was identified through phone metadata and the activist whose location data was sold to their government. Privacy isn't a luxury problem. It's a survival problem.

"Nobody is interested in your boring data." Boring data is the most valuable kind. Not your secrets... Your patterns: When you wake up. Where you go every Tuesday. What you buy when you're sad. Who you call when you're scared. Patterns predict when you're vulnerable.

Zuckerberg has a private island. Bezos has a superyacht with a decoy yacht. Musk's exact location is never public. But your location history is a line item in an ad auction. Privacy scales with net worth.

Peter Thiel funded a lawsuit that destroyed Gawker for publishing private information about him. He also co-founded Palantir, which sells mass surveillance infrastructure to governments worldwide. His privacy: litigated and protected. Yours: a product line.

TikTok tracks keystrokes in its in-app browser. LinkedIn reads clipboard without asking. Instagram tracks you across non-Meta sites. You're not paranoid about apps. You're paying attention to disclosures buried in their ToS updates.

Tech companies employ hundreds of lobbyists in Washington. Privacy advocates cannot afford one. The law reflects who wrote the arguments that shaped it. This is not how democracy is supposed to work. It is how democracy actually works.

The advertising industry funds most of the internet you use for free. The advertising industry also funded most of the lobbying that killed federal privacy legislation. You got a free product. You paid with the law that would have protected you.

The surveillance economy was not built on your consent. It was built during a window when most people didn't know about it, the law hadn't caught up, and the companies moved faster than anyone could regulate. By the time you understood the terms, you were already in it.
