In 2018, one man appeared to hold the passwords to an empire.
QuadrigaCX was Canada’s biggest crypto exchange, handling hundreds of millions in customer funds. To users, it looked legitimate: sleek website, fast growth, endless promises. But behind the screen, most of the money was controlled by one person founder Gerald Cotten.
Then he died suddenly in India at age 30.
According to the company, Cotten was the only person with access to the cold wallets. the offline accounts holding customers’ crypto. No backup keys. No second signatory. No recovery plan. Just one laptop, one man, and passwords nobody else knew.
When news broke, panic spread instantly. Over 100,000 users were locked out. People who thought they were holding life-changing money suddenly had nothing but login screens and support tickets.
Investigators dug deeper and found something darker.
Some wallets believed to contain customer funds were empty long before Cotten died. Others had never held the balances the exchange claimed. Court filings later suggested customer money had been mixed, moved, and traded recklessly. Millions vanished through bad bets, fake accounts, and missing records.
The mystery only grew. Online forums exploded with theories: Was he really dead? Were the funds hidden? Was the death staged? No hard evidence proved those claims, but the suspicion never stopped.
In crypto, everyone talks about decentralization. But this was the opposite: a financial system built on one human being.
No government freeze. No hacker army. No complex exploit.
Just a password no one else had.
And when that password disappeared, so did fortunes.
