2026 Sports in Kansas 4A Boys 🏀Coach of the Year: Don Blanchat, Baldwin
Don Blanchat led Baldwin to a 22-6 season and a 4A state championship, defeating Rock Creek 66-60 in the state finals at Hutchinson. The title marked the first boys basketball state championship in school history, coming in Baldwin’s first-ever appearance in a state championship game.
The Bulldogs finished the year playing their best basketball in March, validating a season built on belief and high expectations.
“It was a season with high expectations,” Blanchat said. “At times people doubted what may happen at the end, but the players and coaching staff always believed, and when March hit, we were playing our best basketball.”
Baldwin navigated one of the toughest leagues in the state, splitting with 5A state champion Bonner Springs and showcasing the strength at the top of the Frontier League. The Bulldogs were led by standout players Cooper Carr and Leo Schoenberger, two of the top players in Kansas regardless of class.
Blanchat, who took over the program after previously serving as an assistant at Baldwin, has built a steady winner with an 88-52 record over six seasons as head coach. His coaching journey also includes time at Mankato High and Osawatomie, where he spent over a decade building programs.
An alum of Quivira Heights, Blanchat credits a long list of influences throughout his career, including his father and the coaching staff at Baldwin, specifically Pete Carr, for their impact along the way.
With a historic first title and a team that peaked at the right time, Blanchat and Baldwin capped off a championship season in 4A. #sportsinkansas

Our process/criteria/guidelines guarantees representation across the state:
• At least one player has to be from large schools (6A/5A)
• At least one player has to be from mid-sized schools (4A/3A)
