August 2013, India’s largest oil tanker, MV Desh Shanti, was carrying Iraqi crude oil for India. On the way, the Iranian Navy stopped it and held it hostage at Bandar Abbas. The crew was beaten and pressured to confess that they were spies. The Indian government tried appeasing Iran for a month, requesting them to release the tanker. Eventually, India had to rely from friendly Gulf countries and American pressure, after which 25 Indian crew members and the crude-oil-laden tanker was set free. It was the UPA Govt and the PM was Manmohan Singh and India-Iran relations were supposedly very strong
