I'd pay some subscription to go to some gym/arena space down the street where I could play the equivalent of an airsoft/paintball type game but through an AR headset. No matter how good VR gets, it can never replace the experience of sprinting full speed in real life, then jumping and diving. This is something I think the tech crowd overlooks, that there is a good percentage of people that like to go outside, or go places, for exercise. Then in the paintball/airsoft space there is a good chunk of people willing to pay $500 to $1000 for equipment. Some even higher. They are also already completely used to wearing big bulky masks on their face. I suspect this idea gets overlooked because most people's minds will associate it with lasertag and we all know lasertag sucks. Lasertag is some stupid chuck-e-cheese attraction for kids. But this is why it's important to come at it from the paintball/airsoft perspective, because those don't suck. Those are quite fun, with a very committed older playerbase. Willing to spend a lot of money. With professional leagues. Paintball was once broadcast on ESPN. Once upon a time paintball almost got into x-games. It definitely is not lasertag. However, in the past few decades paintball has seriously dwindled. Not because people don't like running around arenas playing a competitive sport but because 1) It is very expensive to play, $100 a day. Airsoft gained a number of players because of this. Then 2) people became more concerned about the pain and welts, airsoft also suffers from this issue. Which some kind of AR virtual/physical hybrid solves both those issues. I also suspect this has been overlooked because most people associate it with just a "VR Gym", but the crowds that go to airsoft/paintball are not the same average gym-goers. This would attract a different demographic that would have no interest in just a gym. It is a competitive sport. But that is the complication, it needs to be as compelling as real paintball or airsoft. Come off as a real competitive sport. It needs to capture what makes those work. Except replace the physical ammunition with things rendered virtually. Unfortunately, this probably would require custom hardware to be made to do properly... but maybe that's not so absurd now with the number of OEM parts available for XR?
