Japanese animations studios do not have the resources to make 3D animated films that can compete with Hollywood.
Hollywood films cost 10s or hundreds of millions. There is currently no system in Japan to make 3D animated films on that level. Nintendo Pictures is also a small studio that usually makes shorts, so they would have to scale up massively to make a feature film that can compete at the global box office imo.

In fact why does Nintendo even need to team up with another Studio, aren't they big enough to release their own films in theaters? It's still Nintendo after all
