We were in West Central Saskatchewan last week assessing a soil compaction problem and offering a Strategic Tillage solution with a Karat 9 Intensive Cultivator. We had a pit dug and used a soil penetrometer. The root zone was limited to the top 3-4" due to a compacted (>300 psi) below down to 8-9" depth. We changed the 7 m (21') wide machine to spikes in 15 minutes without wrenches and went down to 10" The Karat fractured the hard pan completely. We're holding a LEMKEN field day with Lazar Equipment in Meadow Lake Saskatchewan at 1 pm on October 8. You'll see the Karat 9 Intensive Cultivator bust through hard pan, mix residue and even create a seedbed in many conditions in a single pass.

We had a great field day at the Fiske, SK Community Food Grains bank last Friday. They have a great group of volunteers. Here are a couple of photos of the lentils. The most common comments were that it looks like vertical banding helps the seedling set roots and find nutrients and moisture. We expect that 5-6" furrow will also help moderate and optimize soil moisture (although this field is quite sandy). What do you think?
