Great article Mark. Really captures the nuance of why you cannot draft him at 7. You have more “positionless” upside with downs. Flores/jones played a lot of 2 high shell/3 safety looks. And while they were in 3/4 base quite a bit they also played a ton of 4-2-5 looks/nickel. Downs would unleash the entire defense. Cross would be ss-lb in the box, the rover. Downs would be the ultimate filed general and master dishes piece. Only safety in college to have over 100 snaps each in the box, at slot, or deep. And then you find a decent FS. Yiu could have these guys rotating at the last second to disgues or bring pressure. It also unleashes Chenal / Luvu to play downfield and thump. You do have the green dot issue unless Magee is ready. Downs is a force multipler and elavtes the whole scheme. It’s just too much of a risk for us to draft Styles. We need a slam dunk blue chip player on def or on off, even if the ceiling is a little lower. our talent is still too thin. Maybe Styles ceiling is super high, but you just do not know what he is or if he will become that. That fact that you mention Jamin Davis, wow, that’s scary and the comp with Simmons is right on. While he miss 0 tackles this year, all the clips I have seen have him playing too high and with no violent force or push back in the off player.
