Back for seconds of the Taverham Smew. Sad to hear reports from staff about birders/photographers not paying entrance fee, climbing in over fence by road & going off piste 😡

@carlsayerUCL This shows phosphate levels on one gravel pit. Peaks are indicative of flooding.

@TaverhamMill Can u tell on concs of nitrogen and phosphorus in lake and fish stock?

Installing marginal plants on Taverham Mill Lake recently. These Pre-established coir rolls are fantastic and full of yellow iris. #taverhammill

@carlsayerUCL The lake is spring fed, it rarely foods. Naturally bunded with wide buffer strips between agricultural land. There is always potential for leaching but regular water quality analysis does not suggest this. There are mixed macrophyte species and a healthy balance of algae.

@TaverhamMill I would say main prob looks like eutrophication

@carlsayerUCL Shading from trees planted too close to margins. Erosion of steep sided gravel banks and a whole host of other factors. Unfortunately, these gravel pits dug pre-war weren’t created with much thought for legacy. Always a struggle, but we’ve created more habit over recent years

@TaverhamMill Important Q to ask is why no wetland plants growing naturally? Answer to this Q might allow you to undertake some v good focused lake conservation work.
