@FrHilderbrand @FrJoshMiller “Mr. Belloc, your thoughts?” “The Catholic Church is an institution I am bound to hold divine — but for unbelievers a proof of its divinity might be found in the fact that no merely human institution conducted with such knavish imbecility would have lasted a fortnight.”

2) for someone born to or living in a completely dysfunctional place with abusive people, a quiet cul de sac is about heaven on earth, not to mention the American dream for lots of people in lots of circumstances.

We are meant to laugh at the wish to live a boring suburban life in a knock off Levitt Town. The composers made two mistakes going for derision: 1) the song is far too pretty and the character far too sympathetic;

@mpaulseder Billy Joel is the bard of the ethnic working class. Springsteen is the bard of annoying people who like to pretend they are working class.

@gscottoliver @HollyCabot Me: He played college hockey at BU. See, there is Mike Eruzione & Dave Silk & Jack O’Callaghan. They all played for BU. B: I didn’t know that. Cool. Me: What is the matter now? B: Nothing. He (Craig) is just still very, very handsom. Me: 🙄

@gscottoliver @HollyCabot Story from when I was dating my bride: we went to a BU hockey game at which the alumni from the 1980 USA gold medal team was being honored. There was an event for ticket holders before the game & Jim Craig walked in. Bride: OMG Me: What is it? B: That’s Jim Craig. Why is he here?

@nobodyknows2322 Any girl who is in good shape, moderately outgoing, and not interested in college should make her way to Las Vegas or LA and work as a server in one of the stupidly expensive night clubs selling bottles of booze with a 1000% markup to dudes with more money than sense.

This is the real reason nobody wants to go onto blue collar trades anymore You can make more at In-N-Out after a couple years
Frylock@Blueelectron4

@nobodyknows2322 I think there will be more work in services. We already see waiters in NYC making 6 figures. The spreadsheet job of 2050s might be the service jobs of making clients feel like a million bucks. It's also why teaching isn't going anywhere. Maslow tells us what is social is valued.

@nobodyknows2322 There is a certain level of waiting and bartending that is definitely the culmination of a career in service and pays very, very well. The wait staff at a high end steak place are extremely professional and highly compensated.

@nobodyknows2322 There have always been these “hidden” service jobs that pay very well. In the 1990s, doorman at a Vegas strip hotel was a six figure job. Less so now, but cocktail waitresses or bartenders are still at that level. Waiting in a high end restaurant as well still.

@nobodyknows2322 Every electrician I know does residential work on the side and has 2 prices: one for credit card/check and one for cash. A lot of trade income goes unreported/untaxed.

@nobodyknows2322 I dunno. If you want to own your own business and make a lot of money, going into the trades is still a very good deal. More millionaires drive F-150s than any other vehicle for a reason. Also, lots of tradesmen do something called “side work” which is usually paid in cash…

Vegas is set. Michigan, North Dakota, Denver and Wisconsin. This is going to be incredible. College hockey deserves this.
