The Newbies Playbook – Ep 9 How to Spot a Good Project (Without Falling for the Hype) Before you read this ➥ Like if you’ve ever chased hype before. ➥ Retweet so other newbies don’t fall for traps. ➥ Bookmark this guide…it might save you one day. Follow @That_GreyManX more clarity in your Web3 journey. Let’s go. Story time: Back in 2021, my friend Leo thought he had cracked crypto. Every token with “moon,” “doge,” or “elon” in the name he was in. He told everyone, “Bro, I’m early. This is the next big thing.” Two weeks later, his wallet was emptier than his hope. Why? He was investing in noise, not value. He didn’t understand what made a project good he just followed the crowd. So today, let’s make sure you don’t repeat Leo’s mistake. Here’s how to actually spot a good project without getting lost in the hype. 1. Start With the Problem Every strong project starts by fixing something real. If you can’t explain what problem it solves in one sentence, it’s probably not worth your time. Ask yourself: → “Why does this exist?” → “Would people care if it disappeared tomorrow?” If the answer is no, then it’s not solving anything that matters. Real projects fix pain points not just chase trends. 2. Check the People Behind It Forget logos, followers, and buzzwords. Who’s actually building it? → Are the founders public and active? → Have they built or contributed to anything before? → Do they engage openly with the community? If you can’t find who’s behind the curtain you’re probably the product. Good teams don’t hide. They show up. 3. Look at the Community You can tell a lot about a project by its people. If everyone’s only shouting “wen moon??” or “next 100x soon!” that’s not a community. That’s a casino chatroom. But when you see people asking smart questions, sharing ideas, giving feedback that’s a good sign. Because real believers talk about the mission, not just the market cap. 4. Understand the Token (If There Is One) A good token isn’t made for gambling it’s built for purpose. Ask: → What’s this token actually used for? → Does it have utility (access, governance, staking)? → Or is it just there to make early buyers rich? If you can’t explain the token’s purpose in your own words skip it. 5. Watch How They Communicate You’ll notice this pattern fast: Scam projects promise everything. Real ones communicate clearly. A good team updates regularly, shares progress, and owns up when things go wrong. They’re not shouting “partnership soon” every week. They’re building quietly and consistently. 6. Try It Yourself If you can, use the product. Does it actually work? Is it easy to understand? Does it feel like something people outside crypto could use too? Because great products feel real. Not just hyped in whitepapers and pitch decks. The truth: Spotting a great project isn’t about being early it’s about being aware. Hype fades. Utility lasts. And those who stay patient and observant always end up ahead. So next time you feel FOMO kicking in, remember Leo. He chased noise. You? You’re chasing knowledge. That’s how you win long-term. 𝐈𝐅 𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐖𝐄 𝐁𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐈𝐒 𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐘, 𝐖𝐄’𝐕𝐄 𝐀𝐋𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐘 𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐄𝐃𝐆𝐄. Let’s slow this down for a second. Trading is not easy. Anyone who trades properly earns that skill. Charts, risk management, psychology, execution. That’s a craft, and it deserves respect. But let’s be honest with ourselves. Most of us in this space aren’t practicing a craft. We’re outsourcing decisions. We wait for someone louder, bigger, or more confident to speak. We wait for a tweet, a call, or a moment that feels safe. Then we move. And the question that follows is usually the same. “What should we buy?” That question isn’t bad. It’s revealing. It reveals a gap in understanding. Because buying without context is just hope. And hope is not a strategy. Context is what keeps us calm when price moves against us. Context is what stops panic selling, doom scrolling, and switching narratives every two weeks. So how do we build context? Contribution. When we contribute to a project, even in small ways, we’re forced to understand what’s being built. We learn who’s building it. We see the real problems, not just the marketing threads. That proximity changes how we think. We stop obsessing over price and start paying attention to progress. We stop reacting to noise and start recognizing signals. This is where real conviction comes from. Not the loud, performative kind. The quiet kind that doesn’t need constant reassurance. Here’s something we don’t talk about enough. The real advantage in this space isn’t being first. It’s being close. Close enough to the work to tell the difference between substance and hype. Our skills have value. Our time has value. Our network has value. Even our attention has value. Smart people deploy those before they deploy money. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t trade. If trading is our edge, we should lean into it. It means we shouldn’t let price be our only relationship with a project. If all we know is the chart, we’re gambling on vibes. So yes, we can buy when we’ve done the work. We can invest when we understand the risk. But let’s upgrade the question. Instead of asking, “What should we buy?” Let’s start asking something better. “Where can we contribute?”
