The Friends of H.O.P.E supports the #Nilgiris tribal farmers and growers through provision of training in organic and restorative cultivation. FoH assists villagers and traditional healers across communities through provision of education and advice on multiple health concerns.

The #Nilgiris biosphere contains medicinal plants used for thousands of years in treating people - the basis of the traditional Indian health system. We train VHOs in traditional health systems to harvest this knowledge to provide holistic solutions to community health problems.

The Friends of H.O.P.E assists the indigenous tribes' people of the #Nilgiris. Our aim is to encourage communities as diverse as the Nilgiris territory, to look after their land and to use it well to improve their lives - and for the sake of the #Earth friendsofhope.org.uk

The #Nilgiris is situated between Karnataka (N) and Kerala (W). The territory and climate are extraordinarily diverse. Swathes of forest & ancient grasslands have been destroyed, soil erosion is rife, and the landscape is populated with degraded, polluted watersheds & farms.

7 healers actively work with the team. Knowledge sharing & capacity building between healer and VHO has begun - a further 18 healers have come forward to allow their knowledge to be documented. Healers at Kadosolai village where they've converted a building into a health clinic.

Up to 15 women from tribal communities who we currently describe as village health organisers [VHO’s], have been trained in traditional health systems (medicinal plants, etc). Knowledge harvesting exercises aid understanding of existing VHOs knowledge levels and to build upon it.

FoH together with NAT, support the education of young people from #Nilgiris tribal communities through grants. Students currently attending Victoria Armstrong School in Kothagiri, the Tribal school and drop-out school in Gudalor, and the NWTWS school hostel all receive grants.

An extended monsoon season and early arrival of heavy rains Mar/Apr ruined the first cropping of the year. A situation worsened by the COVID 19 lockdown - a farmer cannot market his produce so has to leave crops to rot. Thambatty produce at conference attended by The Collector.

Some 71,900 farmer growers eke out a living on less than 2.5 acres. Our challenge is to train/support farmer growers changing to organics, and provide capacity building to the Dept. of Horticulture. BD compost making at Thambatty nursery and making cow pat pit manure (Paniya).

Rejuvenation of Traditional Tribal Medical Practices project (RTTMP) encourages self-reliance and delivers front line healthcare in 60 tribal villages (1700 families, over 7200 people). This initiative is facilitated by our partner agencies NAWA, and The Garden of HOPE Trust.
