Even so, I went to the hospital every single day just to drop off her favorite snacks. One afternoon, as I was walking back to my car, I suddenly heard a voice call out. I looked up. It was my mom. She was peeking through a tiny gap in a third-floor window. It was the first time I had seen her face in weeks. I just froze… and then I started crying right there in the parking lot. Then she began tossing the snacks I had brought her out the window, one by one. With every throw, she shouted, “Give this to Peanut! Give this to Beans! Give this to your father!” Peanut is me. Beans is my younger brother. Even in the middle of her illness, even while she was battling her own mind, she was still thinking about her children. Still thinking about us. I was sobbing as I picked the treats up from the ground, looking up at her and yelling back, “Okay! I will! Thank you!” Later, I found out she spent hours every day staring at the parking lot, just waiting for my car to appear. She was always waiting for me.

I went on a date and everything was going so well. Baba finished his meal, I was almost done with mine, and boom—he said, “Babe, I need to pick something from my car.” I replied “okay,” laughed, and continued eating. After about 10 minutes and he still hadn’t returned, I called the waiter, asked for the bill, and brought out my ATM card to pay. Just as I was about to, he showed up and apologized, saying his car alarm went off while he was reaching for something, then asked why I had requested the bill.
