Our journey began with a simple concept to support unhoused people struggling with addiction by providing real-time access to services, incentivizing recovery, and focusing on abstinence (which includes MAT). We committed to creating a fail-safe continuum that offers a true pathway to independence and a new life. Most importantly, we prioritized transparency and results — and WE DID IT!

Hope House is a sober shelter, and in the first six months since opening, it has achieved an impressive 78% success rate in moving residents into supportive housing or other long-term recovery programs.  Hope House ensures that people struggling with addiction aren’t surrounded by the same drugs and alcohol they are trying to leave behind. The program, led by the Salvation Army, centers on sobriety and recovery.  As Supervisor Matt Dorsey said during our tour, many problems begin to solve themselves when drugs and alcohol are removed from the equation. We still have work to do on our streets, but we will keep doubling down on solutions that are working.

Recovery is possible with high quality programs like Hope House, run by our partners at @salvationarmysf @TheWayOutSF. It’s just one example of the changes SF is making to help people break cycles of addiction and homelessness, and reclaim their lives.

Hope House is the only abstinence-based shelter in SF history. On days like this, seeing participants enjoying the park together is a beautiful reminder that recovery, new beginnings, and brighter futures are possible. Recovery 1st! @TheWayOutSF

If you want to house 100 homeless people in a new apartment, it costs $100 million plus $50k per year for the rest of their lives. OR, you can do transitional housing for $31k per year for 2 years, people become independent and pay their own rent. 🧵 @SteveAdami @TheWayOutSF

San Francisco has spent heavily on homelessness housing and behavioral health, yet many programs still report success rates near 10 percent. What helps people stay off the street long term?

This week, our Culinary Training Academy cohort (part of @TheWayOutSF's workforce development) welcomed Eric Orantes from @sfrotary. These moments connect participants to real pathways in food and hospitality. Grateful for partners who invest in the next generation. ☕️

Not long ago, he was homeless. Facing prison. Cut off from family. Now he works at SF’s first sober shelter helping others rebuild. This is @TheWayOutSF's Recovery System of Care from treatment to housing to independence. Not a handout. A way back. One life at a time.

Mayor @DanielLurie shared a story of a man who graduated from @TheWayOutSF and is now working, rebuilding his life, and reconnecting with his son. This is what recovery looks like. If we love San Francisco, we have to refuse to give up on it. Recovery 1st! 💛
