Assassination attempts, convention battles, failed candidacies, protests and police: if every day feels like 1968 again, at least we can look back at how bad things actually got during that long-ago summer... And might still get today
New York Times Opinion@nytopinion

“The White Album” by Joan Didion recounts a disorienting attack of vertigo the author suffered, writes @TimDenevi. Now an unearthed audiotape with Didion reveals the story of the momentous events around R.F.K.’s assassination that preceded her breakdown. nyti.ms/3OZR6CM

@JoyceCarolOates Joan Didion uses this same language when she quotes a runaway in "Slouching." It's reminiscent of how she uses Orwell's phrase "foredoomed to failure" to reproduce her psychiatric evaluation in "The White Album"...

After his father’s suicide, Hemingway wrote, “My mother is an all time all American bitch and she would make a pack mule shoot himself; let alone poor bloody father.” in time, Hemingway's mother mailed him a gun of his father's though not the one that Hemingway would eventually use on himself.

@JoyceCarolOates Hi Joyce, this is quoted without context: I’m the actual text of F&L, HST is telling the reader what Spiro Agnew thinks journalism is. As you know, Thompson—at least when he was writing this in March 1971, thought the opposite.

why would anyone say this, or quote this? great investigative journalism is essential for civilization. the early 20th century muckrakers (including Upton Sinclair), mid-century John Hershey ("Hiroshima"), Rachel Carson ("Silent Spring"), Capote ("In Cold Blood"), Michael Herr ("Dispatches").... look at what is highest in the profession like these books, not at what is lowest.
Dr. Hunter S. Thompson@GonzoVice

Journalism is not a profession or a trade. It is a cheap catch-all for fuckoffs and misfits—a false doorway to the backside of life, a filthy piss-ridden little hole nailed off by the building inspector, but just deep enough for a wino to curl up from the sidewalk and masturbate like a chimp in a zoo-cage.

The second leg of the "Waiting For Britney Spears" tour continues this week. Readings and conversations in Chicago, Atlanta, Philly, and D.C. I'll be signing books, attacking Justin Timberlake's vests, and making belabored Britney and Laura Palmer analogies. A gala affair

Really late to the game here but finally really diving into @TimDenevi’s first book… really thoughtful, immersive memoir + research, making me think carefully about my own family’s multiple diagnoses.

This is indeed awful, @LitBoxBooks!! They should really release our funds today. We are incredibly stressed after fronting all of that $$ for book inventory and not getting reimbursed for book sales because @NayaxGlobal won’t resolve the issue!!

@amandafortini Ha, it was taken out front of the garage to the giant old house she was renting on Franklin Avenue--right after Slouching was published in May and probably right before she had a mental breakdown in Honolulu in June... 1968: far and away her most productive and least-sane year!

This is one of the famous Joan Didion portraits Julian Wasser took for TIME in 1968. I've always thought it was a very glamorous photo—she's posing in front of her Corvette Stingray and smoking a cig, after all—but it just came up in my Instagram feed, and when I looked at it now, I suddenly saw it anew: She appears to me like a writer barely holding it together—who was up late on deadline, threw on a dress in a rush, and didn't brush her hair. I relate so thoroughly.

I wrote about the Jake Paul - Mike Tyson fight, the desolation of modern Dallas, and what it was like to lose at beer pong to Logan Paul in @countyhwy — a fantastic print-only publication available at bookstores across the country. Check it out!

It's impossible to convey the sprawl of these fires to an outsider. These aren't just multi-millionaires living in bucolic canyons. These are regular residential neighborhoods too – ones you would think were too embedded in the maze of concrete & commerce to ever go up in flames
