It works for me specifically because he isn't the protagonist. He's an obstacle that 90% of the cast either would like, or have had their crack at. He would be unbearable if we were following him, but since we follow his son who wants to beat him, it works for me.

This is a bit of a personal opinion here, but Yuujirou Hanma, as a character, is obnoxious and boring. Like, entire governments bend over backwards for this guy and everyone acts like he's the pinnacle of all that is man. And because he's got nowhere to go, he's dull.
