As part of #WomensHistoryMonth, it’s important to recognize that we don’t always learn from the lessons history gives us to do better. Ella Flagg Young became the first female superintendent of a major school district in 1909, but it would take another 64 years before the first Black woman held that position. In 1973, Barbara Sizemore was named Superintendent of @DCPublicSchools, becoming the first Black woman to lead a major school system. Dr. Sizemore was a staunch advocate for academic achievement for the students in Washington, DC. She was charged with leading DC Schools at a time when the District was still partially under congressional control.  And she did not back down when it came to her beliefs and the needs of DC students. However, her commitment was not always met with support from her superiors and colleagues.  During her tenure she was labeled as difficult and stubborn– words still used to describe too many #WomenLeadingEd when we refuse to accept the status quo.
