In this matter of whether or not Catholic bishops today can elect the next true Pope through an extraordinary election, it is not helpful to mischaracterize this by throwing out the term "conclavism" and simply saying "ridiculous!" An imperfect council of bishops representing the whole church is something seriously discussed by the most noted theologians in the past. It deserves serious discussion now, not summary dismissal with dogmatic claims that only Cardinals can elect and, therefore, the Church would defect if she didn't have Cardinals, or unsubstantiated claims that only residential bishops could do so. One of the most frequent complaints made by clergy who hold the Thesis Cassiciacum over the years has been that those arguing against their position have simply never bothered to understand it correctly or have misrepresented the terms they use. Let us hope the same clergy make the same effort to correctly understand and seriously discuss the position of other clergy.
