@AristotleMrs @RestoreTrustNT @CSCJuett @nationaltrust Banks and insurance companies have ombudsman - they are not charities. And yes many large landlords (excluding the National Trust) subscribe to the Housing Ombudsman. There is no good reason why the National Trust couldn’t have an ombudsman.

@rfctabs @CubbingtonWds @RestoreTrustNT I’m sorry but that is not accurate. There are lots of farmers, tenants, members and volunteers with legitimate concerns. You shouldn’t sweep them all aside blaming ‘infiltrators’. There were lots of legitimate resolutions and people standing for the Council.

@nt_scones @KnoleNT The National Trust was created by Parliament. It’s not a government body but there is absolutely no reason why it couldn’t have an Ombudsman to help resolve problems when they arise. All sorts of organisations and companies benefit from them.

@TrowanFarm @KnoleNT They’re all government bodies as far as I know - the National Trust isn’t. I’m personally all for discussion on governance - it’s a good discussion to have. But not with a group that is simultaneously trying to enforce fascist behaviours of information control and exclusion.

The hateful agenda of Restore Trust was comprehensively rejected and defeated today. Let’s mark the occasion with this @KnoleNT scone from Sheila and look forward to continuing the traditions of the National Trust together - for everyone, for ever.

Hello @nt_scones. Reporting for sconepal duties despite the rather damp weather today. An excellent cheese triangular version from the brew house @KnoleNT

@MilesKing10 @RestoreTrustNT @CSCJuett @nationaltrust The Charity Commission won’t investigate individual cases so tenants, farmers, volunteers, covanantors etc have no recourse. Why not have an ombudsman to help resolve problems? All good institutions have them!

@TrowanFarm @RestoreTrustNT @CSCJuett @nationaltrust The National Trust is a charity and is subject to Charity Law and regulation by the Charity Commission. If you have a complaint take it to the CC. Why should NT be treated differently from all other charities in having its own Ombudsman? An absurd idea.

@jamesinealing @CSCJuett @RestoreTrustNT @nationaltrust Yes the debate was subverted to be left against right and all common sense went out of the window. Sadly the tenants, farmers, volunteers and covenantors who need an Ombudsman suffer as the NT management became unimpeachable.

@NickPoole1 Absolutely not. The Charity Commission won’t look at individual cases. The National Trust is an enormous, powerful institution that sometimes makes mistakes. Tenants, farmers, volunteers, conanantors etc sometimes need help. Its just good governance.

@TrowanFarm There are already plenty of safeguards under Charity Law, & governance + pathways for appeal through Charity Commission. The other institutions you mention have completely different governance structures with their own regulatory frameworks. NT is a Charity not a state service

I am pleased that that paid-for attempted takeover at National Trust has failed. It is important for all voluntary and charitable-sector orgs. Vested interests should not be allowed to bully or buy their way into governance.

@CharlieMawer The National Trust is an enormous powerful institution which makes mistakes from time to time. It absolutely needs an Ombudsman to help tenants, farmers, volunteers, covanantors etc who otherwise have nowhere to turn.

@CeliaRichards0n Do you think having an Ombudsman is a bad idea? What about NT tenants, volunteers, farmers, covanantors who need someone independent to turn to if they have a problem? The NHS, Local Authorities, Universities, Parliament etc have them. Sounds like simple good governance to me.

The resolution against National Trust participation in Pride was not carried; the resolution against ‘rewilding’ also not carried. The resolution calling for an Ombudsman to regulate the Trust was not carried.

National Trust Council election results: all 7 candidates recommended by the Nominations Committee made up of National Trust volunteers and members have been elected. Turnout was very high this year. Thank you very much for taking part.

@CeliaRichards0n The role of the NT council is to hold the Trustees to account. How can they can do that if members are “recommended” ie selected by the NT management? The AGM established that the NT can defeat all independent candidates and members resolutions. A total failure of NT governance.

Well done @nationaltrust members for seeing off the Restore Trust infiltration. Have to remain vigilant about their well-funded, far right-motivated misrepresentations.

So relieved to read this. It was hearing the story of the Gay owner of Kingston Lacy (& his banishment from the UK) when I was eight, that inspired me to want to work for the @nationaltrust - to tell stories like his - the happiest 9 years of my working life.
