Data alone doesn’t drive value. It’s HOW it’s applied that transforms operations. 🌐🔧 In modern manufacturing, data-driven decisions become a lever for measurable impact when insights are used to fine-tune inventory, close skill gaps, optimize automation, or extend equipment life. 🔹 Even legacy systems have a role to play. When digitized and analyzed, they support forward-looking strategy and smarter maintenance. 🔹 The next step lies in making data fluency routine by embedding real-time insight into daily decisions and not just big-picture plans. How is your organization building a culture of data-informed action?

While #IndustrialAI continues to shape manufacturing, many current approaches remain fragmented due to their focus on algorithms over system-level integration. A recent case study on rotating machinery diagnosis proposes a unified framework that combines three essential modules: 1️⃣ Domain knowledge 2️⃣ Structured data 3️⃣ Adaptive modeling Authored by Jay Lee – Clark Distinguished Chair Professor, Director of the Industrial Artificial Intelligence Center (Mechanical Engineering Dept) and one of the US Center’s Executive Committee members – and Hanqi Su of the University of Maryland’s Center for Industrial AI, this paper shows how this architecture can improve diagnostics and support real-world industrial applications: ▸ arxiv.org/html/2504.0179…

Organizations can’t afford to treat institutional knowledge (otherwise known as Tribal Knowledge) as optional. ❌ When critical processes or workarounds remain undocumented and siloed, teams are left vulnerable – especially during turnover, retirement, or scale-up. 🔹 Undocumented knowledge leads to repeated errors 🔹 Slow onboarding and misalignment drain time and resources 🔹 Operational gaps widen with each talent departure We want to hear from you – how is your organization empowering the share of tribal knowledge? Are you building mentorship programs, documenting best practices, using tech to capture expert insights?

The most future-ready businesses don’t treat well-being and progress like an afterthought. They make it part of how they work – every day. That means building real trust, letting values guide decisions, and treating emotional intelligence like a skill. This shift to becoming a “mindful business” becomes especially more impactful when we: ✓ Commit to long-term solutions over quick fixes ✓ Cultivate team resilience and emotional intelligence ✓ Build cultures of individual and collective growth ✓ Align values with daily decisions ✓ Design systems that are inclusive and human-centered To learn more about how the US Center for Advanced Manufacturing puts this approach into practice to shape the #FutureOfWork, visit: usc4am.org

When tech is designed to elevate people and strengthen operations, it becomes a force multiplier. To truly drive transformation, it must serve people, products, and processes in equal measure. That means building systems that are flexible, data-driven, and human-centered: 🔹 Training teams to work alongside automation 🔹 Using real-time data to fine-tune production 🔹 Embedding technology into workflows – not on top of them Our State of U.S. Manufacturing Report, released last year, dives into what we must do as an industry collective – offering insights that are essential to reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re headed. 📘 issuu.com/automationalle…

We’ve always been proud of Michigan’s bold manufacturing legacy. Today, Michigan’s leading the nation in tech innovation and reshoring efforts, starting where progress needs to be amplified – the curriculum. Programs like The Michigander Scholars by the Michigan Technological University connect advanced manufacturing employers with universities, whereas initiatives like the Higher Education Strategic Investment Grant by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation fund higher education partners to grow the state’s Advanced Manufacturing talent pipeline. This all teaches us one key lesson: that true incentives go beyond financial perks, often demanding a deeper investment in what matters most – the people. So now the question is, how do we get the others in the industry to follow AND follow through?

Most manufacturing systems are built for consistency… but that strength can become a weakness when conditions change. Modular designs offer a better path forward, enabling teams to adapt and reorganize without the delays and costs of a full rebuild. It’s an approach that manages complexity while staying aligned with shifting priorities and rising demand. Future-ready manufacturing depends on systems that stay flexible under pressure. The question for leaders is: how adaptable is your operation when the market moves? 💭

Big investments in technology only go so far without the people to bring them to life. Local training, workforce strategies, and regional policy support are what turn infrastructure into impact. But that raises the real questions: 🔹 What’s actually happening on the ground right now to prepare our workforce? 🔹 How are manufacturers aligning talent development with new technologies? 🔹 Where are the gaps – especially in underserved or high-growth regions? Manufacturing organizations across the country are making bold moves, but siloed efforts will never be enough. We need coordinated strategies that connect national investment with local execution, community input, and long-term career pathways. The US Center for Advanced Manufacturing shares the mission of aligning local workforce policy with national investment. To learn more, visit: ↪️ usc4am.org

When Terran 1, the world’s first 3D-printed rocket, lifted off last year, it proved that large-scale printed structures could handle the real stresses of spaceflight. That’s a major leap for additive manufacturing, and a glimpse at what’s possible when speed, sustainability, and design flexibility come together under extreme conditions. This kind of breakthrough moves aerospace forward and reshapes how we think about manufacturing here on Earth. Faster builds. Less material waste. Smarter systems for complex environments. 🌎 Where else do you see 3D printing making the biggest impact next?

Manufacturing doesn’t have to be seen as “boring” or too industrial to matter. When we reframe overlooked ideas (like energy efficiency) not as burdens but as competitive tools, we change the game. In a recent episode of the Barclays Climate Tech Podcast, Lauren Dunford (Guidewheel CEO and US Center for Advanced Manufacturing EC Member) broke it down simply: Energy efficiency only works when it becomes the obvious choice – for the right person, at the right moment. This kind of thinking makes sustainability practical, measurable, and essential to staying competitive in today’s market. The challenge now is making it intuitive, accessible, and impossible to ignore on the factory floor.
