When we speak of xenophobia, let us refer to xenophobic South Africans rather than black South Africans. South Africa has many kind and decent black citizens. What we are seeing is a small, financially struggling segment projecting its anger onto vulnerable black foreigners because it is afraid to confront the real enemy. Xenophobes prey on the weak while remaining intimidated by entrenched white supremacy that has historically dispossessed them and continues to do so. White citizens, who are about 7% of the population, still own over 70% of privately held land, yet this reality is rarely confronted by xenophobes. Instead, frustration is redirected toward black migrants despite the facts; South Africa has about 3 million foreigners, with black African immigrants making up the overwhelming majority at roughly 1.7 to 2.5 million, followed by Chinese nationals at around 400,000, Indian nationals at about 100,000, and white foreign nationals under 100,000. This makes sense because black foreigners come from countries that are closer to and neighbouring South Africa. There are both legal migrants and illegal immigrants across all these groups, yet xenophobic hostility is overwhelmingly directed at black Africans, revealing that the issue is not illegal immigration but frustration directed at the only group they can target. This is why you saw that video where they were kicking sick people out of a hospital just for being foreign, with no regard for whether they were legal migrants or not. This explains why Julius Malema and the EFF are rejected, because they confront inequality and call for land redistribution without compensation while also advocating for coexistence among all black people. Xenophobic actors avoid challenging real power and instead turn on the vulnerable, even though migrant labour and immigration contribute meaningfully to the economy. Xenophobes lack the capacity to understand such principles. Yet the truth is that xenophobes cannot improve their own lives because they would rather blame than work. Even if all foreigners leave, they will still remain poor and will turn on each other with crime and violence. Xenophobes, just like tribalists and racists, are cowards suffering from low self-esteem and know nothing but hatred. Most interestingly, the ANC and its partners in power allow xenophobic actors to terrorise black foreigners without consequences and will never confront it because xenophobes are their votes, even if they do not fight for their land. For all of us black people across Africa, we must never get tired of confronting xenophobia. This is a lesson for us to learn to love each other and treat our foreign black brothers and sisters well in our countries!
