@ScionofCulture No one disagrees that there sint an existing issue but all for a sudden, you have "Chinese influencers" gaining much traction on X, promoting racist shit at a time when most Africans are considering a shift towards the East from the West. Even a mad man can spot the psyop.

I'm seeing so many people trying to find ways to cope with the fact that their POC unity idea is crumbling before their eyes... Is it really so hard to fathom that the Asians in large simply don't view us with respect and dignity? Not everything is a western pysop.

Wie iets positiefs zegt over China, loopt tegenwoordig al snel het risico als propagandist te worden weggezet. Dat bleek deze week opnieuw toen filosoof Sebastien Valkenberg mij in het FD opvoerde als voorbeeld van een ‘hippe influencer’ die bezwijkt voor de aantrekkingskracht van autocratische regimes. Volgens Valkenberg raken steeds meer mensen in het Westen onder de indruk van verhalen over veiligheid, orde en efficiëntie. China speelt daarin een belangrijke rol. Daarbij verwijst hij naar een interview dat ik eerder gaf aan EW Magazine, waarin ik volgens hem instemmend zou hebben geknikt bij opmerkingen over de vermeende superioriteit van China op het gebied van veiligheid. Dat is opmerkelijk, omdat ik juist fel sprak over een vervelende ervaring in een Nederlandse trein, waar ik ’s avonds alleen in een coupé werd lastiggevallen door een man die zijn broek naar beneden trok. Het gesprek ging over veiligheid, vrijheid en de vraag hoe verschillende samenlevingen die begrippen wegen. Dat is geen theoretische discussie. Begin dit jaar zorgde de Chinese kunstenaar en dissident Ai Weiwei voor opschudding toen hij na een bezoek aan China vertelde zich daar op bepaalde manieren vrijer te voelen dan in Europa. Niet omdat China plotseling een liberale democratie zou zijn geworden, maar omdat hij in Europa juist beperkingen en maatschappelijke spanningen ervoer die volgens hem vaak buiten beeld blijven. Je kunt het met Ai Weiwei eens of oneens zijn. Maar het feit dat juist een van China’s bekendste regimecritici zulke observaties doet, laat zien dat de verhouding tussen vrijheid, veiligheid en maatschappelijke orde complexer is dan vaak wordt voorgesteld. Het gesprek daarover zou gevoerd moeten kunnen worden zonder dat iedere vergelijking met China direct wordt gezien als een verdediging van het Chinese politieke systeem. Het feit dat politieke vrijheid belangrijk is, betekent niet dat fysieke veiligheid geen onderwerp van gesprek mag zijn. Sinds de heropening van China na covid vragen veel Chinezen zich af hoe vrij democratische Europese landen eigenlijk zijn wanneer je er op klaarlichte dag beroofd kunt worden of wanneer vrouwen zich steeds minder veilig voelen in het openbaar vervoer. Volgens Valkenberg stellen Chinezen zulke vragen echter niet uit zichzelf. Het zou hun zijn afgeleerd om tegen autoriteiten in te gaan. Des te erger, suggereert hij, dat ook mensen in het vrije Westen daarin meegaan. Ik ben geen spreekbuis van Beijing maar sinoloog. Al bijna twintig jaar bestudeer ik China, woonde er, reis er regelmatig heen en volg er discussies over censuur, propaganda, technologie en publieke opinie. Ik weet dat Chinezen wel degelijk vraagtekens zetten bij wat autoriteiten zeggen. Mijn lezers weten bovendien dat ik regelmatig schrijf over onderwerpen die voor de Chinese overheid allesbehalve comfortabel zijn. Maar de grotere kwestie is niet persoonlijk. Wat mij opvalt, is dat Valkenberg nauwelijks onderscheid maakt tussen China als land, Chinezen als mensen en de Chinese staat als politiek systeem. In zijn wereldbeeld staat het ‘vrije democratische Westen’ tegenover het ‘autocratische China’, waarbij China vrijwel volledig samenvalt met Xi Jinping en de Communistische Partij. Wie vervolgens iets positiefs opmerkt over ontwikkelingen in China, loopt al snel het risico te worden gezien als iemand die propaganda verspreidt. Dat is een problematische manier van kijken. Niet alleen omdat het weinig ruimte laat voor nuance, maar ook omdat het leidt tot een versimpeld beeld van China zelf. Terwijl iedere stap van Donald Trump uitgebreid wordt geanalyseerd, blijft de kennis over China in Nederland opvallend beperkt. Juist in een essay over de gevaren van beeldvorming valt op hoe gemakkelijk Valkenberg Chinezen neerzet als een homogene massa die nauwelijks kritisch zou nadenken. Tegelijk grijpt hij terug op een van de bekendste misvattingen over China: het idee dat iedere burger via een allesomvattend sociaal kredietsysteem voortdurend wordt beoordeeld en gescoord. Dat beeld van een systeem waarin iedere burger een persoonlijke puntenscore krijgt, is inmiddels door onderzoekers overtuigend ontkracht. Toch blijft dit verhaal hardnekkig terugkeren in het publieke debat. Ironisch genoeg laat dat zien hoe ook hoogopgeleide mensen zich kunnen laten meeslepen door techno-oriëntalistische mythes en desinformatie. Dat betekent niet dat er geen reden is om kritisch te zijn op China. Integendeel. China kent censuur. Politieke vrijheden zijn beperkt. Dissidenten staan onder druk. De staat oefent vergaande controle uit over delen van de samenleving en de digitale macht van de Communistische Partij is groot. Dat zijn belangrijke onderwerpen waarover geschreven en gediscussieerd moet worden. Maar juist omdat die problemen bestaan, hebben we geen Orwelliaanse schrikbeelden nodig. Wie China serieus wil begrijpen, moet bereid zijn de werkelijkheid onder ogen te zien zoals die is, niet zoals zij het best past binnen een ideologisch verhaal. Je kunt erkennen dat Chinese steden veiliger zijn geworden zonder censuur goed te praten. Je kunt waardering hebben voor de kwaliteit van de infrastructuur zonder staatscontrole te verdedigen. En je kunt vinden dat er meer gedaan moet worden voor de veiligheid van vrouwen in het Nederlandse openbaar vervoer zonder als bewonderaar van een autoritair regime te worden weggezet. We leven in een tijd waarin het debat over China steeds vaker wordt gedomineerd door uitersten. Sommigen zien het land als een wonderstaat, anderen uitsluitend als een dystopische nachtmerrie. Beide beelden schieten tekort. Juist nu China’s geopolitieke invloed groeit, hebben we behoefte aan kennis, context en nuance. En nu Europa worstelt met zijn eigen problemen, kan het geen kwaad ook af en toe kritisch naar onszelf te kijken. De kracht van onze democratie zou niet moeten afhangen van hoe zwart we het beeld van China kunnen inkleuren. Wie alleen naar de lelijkheid kijkt, ziet China niet.

I strongly disagree. The anger is just a distraction, you cannot build a system on hate because the hate won't just go away when the objective is achieved it will turn you into a hateful person.

There’s a reason Nigerian politicians invest so heavily in tribal and religious bigotry. It’s not by accident. A divided population is easier to control and far less likely to unite against bad governance.

Pan-Africanism does not mean Africa against the world. It means Africa negotiating with the world from a position of strength. There is a difference between partnership and dependency. Africa has been choosing dependency for decades now

@agent_of_change Morocco won’t gain anything out of it though. They’ll just host the Chinese factories for next 10-15 years until another African country provides cheaper land, resources and labourers. It has always been a race to the bottom. First China, now Vietnam, next Africa

Can you tell us about those African countries that are powerful, productive, that run sane and reasonable institutions, that trade independently and with partners of their choice, without foreign coercion, frowns, and meddling, that are secure enough to keep their people safe, that have disciplined elites who love their countries, and that have adopted strategies that make them strong, independent, and sovereign enough to attract global attention and development. We're waiting...

An African said Pan-Africanism is extremely low IQ, while preaching in favour of the Eurocentric unity of the West. I only concluded that some Africans need to die and their generation to become extinct for African liberation to be successful.
