Blood can't just be removed from A to B. Why? It may cost more harm than good.
You have to screen the Blood for transmittable diseases such as HIV 1 and 2, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Syphilis, Malaria, then conservation and storage. Prior to transfusion, Blood crossmatch to make sure the donors Blood isn't reacting with the recipient.
So yes, Blood is donated for free, but it has to be screened before transfusion.
