Former Inter President Steven Zhang sues Oaktree for €450M
Two years after acquiring Inter, Oaktree could face a multimillion-euro legal dispute initiated by former president Steven Zhang in Luxembourg. According to Corriere dello Sport, the claim could reach as much as €450M.
The case stems from the €250M loan granted by Oaktree to Zhang in 2021, which rose to around €400M due to interest. When the loan matured in April 2024, the former owner was unable to repay the debt, and the fund enforced its pledge over Inter’s shares, taking ownership of the club under Luxembourg law.
The central issue in the dispute, however, concerns Inter’s actual value at the time of the acquisition. Under the so-called “Marcian pact” principle, the creditor may recover what it is owed but cannot obtain an economic benefit greater than the amount of the outstanding debt. If the club’s value was found to be higher than the roughly €400 million debt, the difference would have to be paid to Zhang, who continues to follow Inter’s fortunes with particular affection.
Independent experts will likely be required to determine the valuation, taking into account not only the club’s financial statements but also its ability to generate revenue and profits.
Any additional payment would not create a liquidity problem for Oaktree, but it would affect the profitability of its investment. Over the past two years, Inter’s value has increased thanks to sporting results, a second Champions League final in three seasons, higher revenues and improved finances.
Any compensation awarded to Zhang would therefore increase the overall cost of the acquisition and reduce the fund’s expected profit margins.

Ppl saying they’ll stop supporting Inter, dont lie..Do it! Send me your jerseys…You were never a real fan! If you can’t enjoy football due to politics/global issues, you’re weird. Inter came before this player, and Inter will be here after he leaves. Hope he does well for us🙏
