On September 14th, five teams competed in the 7th Annual Architectural Scavenger Hunt hosted by the Worcester County chapter of CSI, in association with Central Mass AIA and Preservation Worcester. Congratulations go out to the winners, A Touch of Gray. bit.ly/3AnmkJO

Elwood Adams Hardware Store. Built in 1782, this was the 1st brick building in Worcester, and one of the oldest hardware stores in the country, operating for 235 years until closing in 2017. Wares would have included the Monkey Wrench, invented by Worcester native Loring Coes.

City Hall. Built by Worcester’s Norcross Brothers Construction Co., who pioneered the concept of a General Contractor and patented flat-slab reinforced concrete. They became the preferred builder of H.H. Richardson and their work includes Trinity Church in Boston.

Green Hill Park Pavilion. The park sits on the former estate of Worcester native A.H. Green, who created the 5 boroughs of New York, unifying the city after running out corruption. His vision resulted in the creation of Central Park, the Bronx Zoo and the NY Public Library.

Union Station. Built in 1911 to replace the 1875 station due to cars colliding with trains at the ground-level tracks. Abandoned in 1972, it sat vacant for 28 years resulting in the collapse of the ceiling and significant damage. It was restored to a transportation hub in 2000.

The Frances Perkins branch library in Greendale. The only one of 3 Carnegie Libraries still operating as a library. Designed by Worcester architect Lucius Briggs, who’s notable work includes Worcester Auditorium, Worcester Country Club and the Fire Alarm Building at Elm Park.
