THREAD: When former President Rodrigo Duterte faced ICC charges, many expected strong youth support—but WR NUMERO data show Gen Z and millennials are instead pulling back from calls for international accountability. ⚖️📉

What do Filipino populist voters want? And what does this mean for the Left? Drawing from @WR_Numero survey data, I argue that we’ve been in a populist moment (6 in 10 Filipinos exhibit high level of populist attitudes!) and this is the opportunity for either the Right (Duterte!) or the Left to assemble “the people” as a political bloc. The challenge, of course, is for the Left to build a more democratic and emancipatory coalition of populist publics. And this, for many reasons, is doable. Populist voters in the Philippines are economically distributive while also being socially conservative and punitive (as exhibited in policy preferences in survey data). To me, this means that there is a left opening in an otherwise right-populist electorate. Populist politics (or agenda!) may actually be a viable strategy to help the Philippine left mobilize new and bigger publics and win power.
