After converting the original image into line art with flat colors and then making it photo-realistic, a fairly realistic image can be generated even with this number of people, but for now the spear tips cannot be generated well. jp.pinterest.com/pin/7266980899…

I first turned the original ukiyo-e into a photo-like image using Grok and then made it into a video. If I did not specify that the two should continue fighting, they simply ran side by side.

Some views also say that certain Japanese spears for mounted combat used straps on the butt end to prevent them from falling.

x.com/Watari_toppa/s… According to the Meisho Genkouroku, Saito Dosan made his soldiers use spears with a shaft length of 5.4 m and a strap on the butt end to increase striking power, but it is unknown whether armies in other regions did this. dl.ndl.go.jp/pid/1043031/1/…

Some Japanese military manuals recommend attaching a strap to the butt end of spears for naval warfare. Spears with such straps may have been handled by gripping near the butt end.

However, since the Tachibana and Shimazu soldiers in this battle were not sailors, such spears may not have been used.

youtube.com/watch?v=1ze7pl… Hand-dao for anti-armor may have a large edge angle. Are wakizashi often smaller in edge angle than katana? Katana with a large edge angle seem to be used not only for anti-armor purposes but also to deflect an opponent’s blade.

It is also possible that those with less physical strength were issued ones with blade lengths in the 70 cm range.

The nagamaki described in the Kenmon Zatsuroku, which was issued to lower-ranked soldiers who were not skilled in handling spears, may have had poor-quality steel for the blade, but was it made thicker to ensure durability? dl.ndl.go.jp/pid/771995/1/48

Horse armor in Eastern Japan may have a high proportion of steel parts like their human armor, but were only completely steel ones not used? Before the late 16th century, human armor may have had few steel parts.

@kaiju_tebasaki 見聞雑録によると、1577年に近江・美濃の農民や僧侶を含む招集兵2800名のうち、槍が不得意なものに長巻が支給されたようですが、農民中心にそうした者もかなり多かったのでしょうか。 dl.ndl.go.jp/pid/771995/1/48

According to the Historia de Japam, at the Battle of Okitanawate in 1584, Shimazu soldiers armed with short spears and long katana charged the Ryuzoji army, which was armed with long spears, and won by cutting the spears with their katana. sengokumap.net/historical-mat…

If the Swiss-style tactic of holding the pike near the center of the shaft and charging did not start with a charge from the beginning, did a possibility exist that they held the end of the pike before the charge?

To the people who ask me if you could fight with them: they weren't *meant* for that. They're still swords, they're sharp and these are good to hit hard. If you like rounded/squary tips check 16th century greatswords, Katzbalgers and Khandas

Whilst not meant for fighting, executioner swords were totally real. This one from Cleveland's museum of Art has a german engraving on the blade that (translated) reads: "When I raise this sword, so I wish that this poor sinner will receive eternal life."

Some people are skeptical about Isengard's army at Helm's Deep. "Why bring pikemen to a siege?" Consider the following points: 1- Rohan is a land of cavalrymen. Being attacked on your way to the siege or riders sallying out (which happens in the movie) are real possibilities. 2- Pikes are GREAT at attacking breaches once walls are undermined, and were used for this purpose during the renaissance (this happens in the movie). 3- We see at least 2 kinds of specialised uruk hai swordsmen (berserkers with two handers and sword and shield infantry) amongst the ranks of the army. When you add in the dedicated sappers, shield bearers, crossbowmen and artillery men, Id say besides bringing some cavalry to support them, this is a perfectly reasonable fantasy army.

Weta cooked hard with the Uruk-hai in Two Towers. The berserkers, the pikemen standing and roaring and charging in the rain are all engraved in my brain.
