Seeing George Ngo’s name in the article getting fourth place at that event brings back memories. He was one of the guys I met at UCLA who didn’t speak to me until I started beating him. Hahaha. We then became friends and he drove me to places to show people how strong I was. In Alpha 2 I could beat Rolentos with Zangief, which was largely considered impossible. He drove me to an arcade to play against Martin Vega, another veteran top player in the SoCal days (another name that could be seen on the ranking board behind Tomo in that famous interview from GamePro). At the time, Martin Vega was considered one of the best Rolentos in SoCal. We played and I can’t remember exactly any scores, but I think it was pretty 50/50. Which at the time was unheard of for Zangief against Rolento. I was definitely surprising a lot of people at that time. And when I finally entered my first Alpha 2 tournament at SHGL, I ended up getting Third Place, losing only to my UCLA Arcade-mate that I drove there (Richard Koven was his name I *think*?), who got 2nd, and Alex Valle who won the tournament. On the way I beat a lot of top players, including Jeff Schaeffer, and I remember though he had the same bravado he’s always had, he looked nervous to fight me as I was taking down name after name in that event. Even caught him with Gief’s Level 3 anti-air Super, which at the time was considered useless (and, honestly, still IS kind of useless). I know it’s hard to imagine that I used to be extremely strong at fighting games these days, and I don’t blame anyone for not believing I used to be any good. There really is very little evidence of my skills from back in the day before streaming and direct feed recording and such. Hahaha. But man, I used to THROW DOWN with the best. 👊
Super Arcade !!!@SuperDojo

Just so the people know... SoCal was ALWAYS tops in the Golden Era. And here's some proof. Look at who entered the "Intermediate," aka the kiddie bracket 🤣 and who got tops in the "Elite" bracket. Here's a 1st hand story for you non-believers. Love you NorCal 😘

The only thing I would add to this is (and this is just my OCD talking and a personal major nitpick of mine) that there’s really no such thing as a “Juggle State”. Even in Alpha 3, there’s no actual “Juggle State” outside of a very few specific examples. They’re all actually just KnockDown States that are all exactly the same and allow for Juggles. There’s no such thing as a “Juggle State”. Whether you can Flip or not is determined by a single factor: does the attacker return to Neutral State while you are in the air? If so, you can Flip. If not, you can’t Flip. (There are a lot of details to this rule regarding corners and lots of other stuff to make it work, you can see the entire Flow Chart in my FAQ under Section 8: Juggling: gamefaqs.gamespot.com/arcade/564869-… ) In general, for Street Fighter, there’s basically no such thing as a “Juggle State”. I know people use it for convenience, but Juggle State is very often exactly the same as a Knock-Down State. Sweeps are often the main exceptions. Here’s a video all about how Juggling in Street Fighter has worked from Super Turbo ALL THE WAY to Street Fighter 6. It’s all been mostly the same system the entire time, shockingly enough (excluding the III series and Alpha 3): “What Are The Juggling Rules In Street Fighter? (Applies To SF6, Too!)” youtu.be/dK9NS26OwII

Quick video on how Alpha 3 added depth to the simple act of getting hit. The tech flip/roll recovery system is something that we only saw a single time in a SF game, and I think it did a lot to make soft knockdowns both more interesting and less potentially round ending.

Here's an easter egg found in the fighting game Power Instinct. Located on Thin Nen's stage is a portrait of Otane high up on the wall. If she lands her transformation, the portrait will also change to her younger self.

Jasmine was the sweetest cat you could ever meet, and yet fierce and full of confidence. Today, she has taken the next step in her journey. She passed away in my arms peacefully and knowing how much she was loved. I can only hope that in the next of her nine lives that she can make someone else as happy as she made me. Or just be the most bad-ass feral cat there ever was. She was my first pet ever along with Nathan, and I’ll never forget her. 🖤🖤 R.I.P. Jasmine: Feb 21, 2012 - Mar 24, 2026 (Pics: One of my last pictures with Jasmine from last night of her pressing her head into my chin and one of the first pictures I ever took of Jasmine basking in the sun of her new home after I adopted her.)
