As things stand the case against him is basically like 3-4 borderline grey zone cases where he killed probable Taliban members who were most likely acting as spotters despite being unarmed. And the actual evidence brief is piss weak. Australian Office of Special Investigations director Ross Barnett said this at the press conference announcing his arrest: “We don’t have access to the crime scenes. We don’t have photographs, site plans, measurements, the recovery of projectiles, blood spatter. We don’t have access to the deceased. There’s no post-mortem report, there’s no official cause of death, there’s no recovery of projectiles to link to weapons that might have been carried by members of the ADF.” Tell me how you prove beyond reasonable doubt that he committed war crimes when that's the evidence brief. It makes no sense to tear down a war hero when the case is so weak, so flimsy, so dependent on hearsay and grey zone allegations like “he maybe killed a guy who was acting as a look out for the Taliban, but the guy didn’t have a gun.”
