- Virus we know a lot about
- it is not covid, much lower R0
- Americans have very low chance of getting it today and shouldn’t panic
- lots of contact tracing is in place and monitoring.

Wow, if true— it means Trump’s CDC is wrong/lying about “prolonged close contact” needed for hantavirus transmission. The cruise ship 🛳️ doctor tells @j_g_allen that 3 positive ship cases did not have any close contact — only shared spaces—this implies AIRBORNE TRANSMISSION.

Something I touch on repeatedly in my Airborne Infection course is that “close contact” is not a good way to describe how a virus is transmitted. It can be communicated as a risk factor for infection, but it does not say what the actual biological mechanism of transmission is.

Earlier today I spoke with the doctor on the ship and he confirmed something. CDC messaging continues to say "prolonged, close contact" but that contradicts: 1) what's in the literature, and 2) what's happening on this ship. --> the doc told me a few who got infected/died DID have direct contact w/ very sick patient while treating them, but 3 who tested positive did NOT have direct physical or close contact - only shared time in a few spaces on the ship where people congregate (dining, lecture area)

The World Health Organization has repeatedly demonstrated a serious learning disability. Applauding this baby step of theirs is gracious, but it’s also telling. We have experts that say Andes is transmissible for a day or more before symptoms start, and yet… we’re just grateful that the WHO finally stopped telling people that surgical masks were sufficient protection. 🤯

It is encouraging to see WHO update its Andes hantavirus guidance on May 8 to recommend respirators rather than medical masks for symptomatic individuals associated with the outbreak. This strain of virus had outbreak in 2018 at a birthday party and now this year from a cruise. But it doesn’t rapidly spread at grocery stores
